Our backyard is a wilderness. I absolutely love having a backyard with woods...there is no possibility of ever having neighbors back there, because it's school property....but there's a few blocks worth of woods between us and the school. So here we are...in the south....and this is what we have seen and know: - Our dog has had 2 ticks in the last 3 days. The last one was ENGORGED in blood. It reminded me of a tick I had when I was a kid...just absolutely huge and disgusting. - This area is ripe with snakes...including the poisonous copperheads and water moccasins. - Heidi already saw a huge dog running loose in the woods behind our house. - There are common deer sightings in our backyard. I tell ya what...it's a jungle back there....yet, it's where the dog needs to go to eliminate...I gotta tell ya, I don't even like taking him back there b/c I despise snakes so much...and ticks aren't among my favorite either. Anybody else have a problem like this?? |
Yes, I don't take my dogs in my yard. It's full of nasty wildlife critters, deer, coyotes in the area, snakes, etc. We built a seond story deck off the kitchen and have made instead of flower boxes from wood, grass boxes for them to use. However, I still stay out with them, resident owl in a tree. I also bought a cyclone run with a secured top for the deck. Jessica |
Hi I am from South Africa and we see daily how construction is taking up what use to be Natural Bush enjoy it while you can. You will not know what it means until it is gone..maybe fence off a safe area for the little ones....Snakes will move if there is high activity in the area, so they should not be a problem..a fence will keep the other things out...GOOD LUCK |
I agree, you don't know what you got until it is gone. can you put up some temperary fencing? we use a few xpens put together to form one when we go away. would that school allow temp fencing? there are sprays like the ortho misquito spray that would help with some of the 'critters' you have, such as ticks. |
We have a farm that we are going to build a house on and we already have a cabin there and spend alot of time there. There are deer, coyotes, copperheads, rattlesnakes, hawks, owls, turkeys, and we have seen a PANTHER, can you believe a panther (or mountain lion, whatever you want to call it). We NEVER leave our babies unattended there or even let them out at night unless they are in our arms. |

An ex-pen will work temporarily and under supervision, but it still sounds like a dangerous place. Make sure to keep a really close eye on the little one, because bad things can happen if you turn your back for a second... |
Only take him out while you can supervise. You don't want him getting bit by a snake or getting into something he's not supposed to. Oh, and also make sure to check him for ticks everytime you bring him in. Lyme disease would not be good. Good luck! |
 I would put up a fence that surrounds my house. Only because I hate snakes. But with the woods so close, there's probably nothing you can do about the ticks. Can you just let your furbabies out in your front yard? :icon5: Those snakes would scare me to death. |

I would take your puppy out on a harness and leash. My parents live in the country surrounded by woods with snakes, coyotes, etc. so when I visit I still take Lacy out on a leash. That way if you take him out on a leash, he is close to you and supervised at the same time. And he can't run off and get snake bitten or attacked in the woods. For the ticks I would talk to your vet about K9 Advantix. I've never used it because I've never had a problem with ticks, but it's supposed to keep ticks off your dog as well as fleas and mosquitos. |
I live about 3 hours away from you in North Alabama and we took the dogs out just this afternoon and ran into a 6 foot long snake! I was FREAKING OUT! But we killed it and threw it back in the woods, but I've always heard, "where there's one, there's more than one." Also, we don't have a bad tick problem (we have ticks, but they aren't rampant), but we do have a rampant infestation of FLEAS! They are uncontrolable. I hate them!!!! So, I feel your pain. |
