Yorkie Puppy Agression I've had my yorkie puppy Tobi for 3 weeks now, and it seems like he's becoming more and more aggressive with me. When my pup gets into stuff he shouldn't, I give him a firm "NO" and try to re-direct him to his toys, but he just winds up going NUTS and barking at me like crazy. When he DOES bark, I leave him alone for 10 minutes. When I come back, he's sweet for the first few minutes, but then he's back to his usual business. I'm not sure where this aggression is coming from because I never physically reprimand my pup, and I do reward him for his good behavior. Has anyone else experienced this growing aggression and is this "just a phase"? |
My pup had a problem similar to this as well. I think the problem lies with him not knowing who is boss (the leader). There are some excellent sites that could help you communicate to the dog that you are the leader. A few things I did was, banish him from the bed or couch when he got aggressive, a firm 'Off!' and a gentle, but firm nudge will do. He cannot get back on if he behaves the same, then its off again. Also try controlling his food more, give it to him for 15 minutes and then take it away. If he didn't eat, he will next time! And make him sit before giving him his food. Teach him some tricks, like 'sit' or 'stay' (I can explain how, if you need me to) for a treat as a reward. If he gets aggressive again, make him leave. Enforce this. If he doesn't leave, chase him out. If he doesn't get off the couch, put him on the floor and don't allow him back on for a few minutes (after he stops trying) and then call him. Sorry... I realize I just "hijacked" your thread to find info for me. Sorry about that. About the aggression issue...we just got a new puppy. Emmy likes him fine as long as we are not holding him! If he gets near us, she starts nipping at him. Just by coincidence, I was watching Cesar Milan's "Dog Whisperer" the other night. He showed how to make one dog back off from another. IT WORKED! I have been doing it with Emmy everytime she acts aggressive towards Oscar. Within three days, I am noticing a great difference in her behavior! |

I'd flip him over on his back and gently hold him there until he calms down. It shows him who's boss, and it IS NOT him:laugh: |
Thanks for all the advice everyone! Tobi is one week shy of being 4 months. He already knows how to sit and lie down...but the "stay" bit isn't working just yet. We've signed him up for obedience classes and hopefully that will work. And I'll definately try the taking the food away after 15 minutes...I usually just leave it there b/c I'm worried he'll become hypoglycemic(sp?) if he misses his meal. And what exactly did the "dog whisperer" do/say? I'm DEFINATELY interested if it worked so well for you! Tobi's aggression has calmed down lately..so..hopefully it was just a phase. taking him for formal training early on is a WONDERFUL idea. I feel like all the time i devoted to training Tobey the first few months are really paying off now. He's only 7 months but is such a wonderful pup. I feel very lucky. It's a lot of hard work because you have to be very consistent. I just read all that I could and took tobey to Petsmarts puppy classes. they were helpful with the basics. The only time tobey will "stay" is when i make him sit before he can go out to the back yard. I make him sit, then i open the door and say stay, stay, (it drives him crazy cuz he whines with anticipation the whole time) but he will stay there until I say "OKAY!" then he takes off running to go see if any of his "friends" are outside (dogs that live next to us and behind us). About the barking, a lot of time it's just playful,but it still annoys me. I have found that shaking a soda can with coins in it works with Tobey. he will still do a little growling when we play, but no barking. and it keeps him from barking out the window at things. |
