Yorkie obsessed with carpet? Sorry to be asking so many questions.... Most of our house is tile, except for our bedroom. Wickett will watch us closely, and the minute he sees the bedroom door open, he'll run in and pee on the carpet. He'll then relocate and rub himself all over it. He does this in the area rug in the bathroom too. He also likes scratching at the carpet. Is this his way of marking his territory? Would getting some sort of scratch rug for pets help out his need to have "rug time"? Since he just got him, I want to make sure to nip the bad behaviors in the bud right away, before they become habitual. |
He is too small to be marking his terriorty. That comes a little later. He may just like the texture of the carpet. I would keep him out of the bedroom until he is trained. Once they pee on the carpet it is a draw to pee in the same spot later. You have to get all the scent up from that area where he pees. You can also try spraying bitter apple in the area after it is cleaned. This smell is a deterrant to them, however, some like it. LOL |
He doesn't want to pee on that cold tile he wants comfort! Ours is a dark berber and we have to watch like a hawk if he goes in there because Maxwell loves carpet. He only likes to walk in the grass if it is completely dry. They can be such prima donnas, bless 'em. But nipping that in the bud will be your best bet. |
My house have hardwood floors and bedrooms have carpets just like yours. Buttercup has his own room and isn't too crazy about carpets as he is with rugs. Buttercup is 99.9% trained and never had an accident until a couple of days ago when I let him into the restroom inside my bedroom. He stood right in front of my face, peed and poop on the rug and did the same thing the next day. KEEP THEM OUT! :D That's the only thing I can suggest. |
They love them some rugs. Mine would leave every other bare spot and find a rug or throw rug. We just installed hardwood through out and removed all the carpeting because Miss Lulu likes cushy places to place her tushy. She is not allowed upstairs alone or when she hasn't gone potty outside because I am afraid for the new very expensive area rugs that I have put in my kids bedrooms. Definitely clean the area well and keep him away from them until he/she is fully housebroken. Carpeting and rugs seem to draw them and once they get to peeing it's hard to get all the stain out completely because the pee seeps under into the padding. |
I think I had a great idea....getting him a little rug of his own. Maybe from Walmart or Target? So he can have a little spot of carpet that's all his. If he goes potty on it, I can just wash it. Or if he feels like scratching it, we won't be all worried about it. Plus, if I do have to replace it, it would be cheap. Oh, and I'll pick a color totally different to anything we have in this house so that he can tell his rug apart from others. How does that sound? I'm trying to think like a yorkie, but I'm new to this. :Puppy2: |
Does anything specific happen before he pees on the carpet? The reason I ask is b/c I have a 7 month old female Yorkie who will pee on the carpet when she does not get her way. She has a bit of an additude. Keep in mind my whole house is carpet except the kitchen. Just keep an eye on him and keep reminding him where he should be going potty. |

Hmmm....I hadn't thought about it that way. There's no specific thing that triggers it, he just runs in and pees. I guess I'll give it a shot, as an area rug at Walmart or Target will be pretty cheap and see what happens. I'm starting to learn just how stubbon yorkies can be! It's a good thing I love a challenge. |
