Should I be doing something more??
 
Rocco is now 8 months old and still has double canines. He LOVES chewing on bones and such which I provide for him, granted they are ok for him to have. He is just not the "TUG OF WAR" kind of pup. I try to get him to play tug of war, but he really only plays that with Coco.

With me he's the sweetest pup, and doesn't understand that I want to play with him when I tug the toy from him. He just wants to willingly give it to his mommy. He's so sweet. I dont want to have his teeth removed. What can I do to get his double canines to fall out. He has 8 canines..lool..4 on top and 4 on bottom.

Coco was a late bloomer and lost her last canine at like 1 year or so, but she LOVES tug of war with me. What more should I be doing, because I want to avoid having him put under?

uggg Im not sure....my sister literally held her Ada down and wiggled them all the time. thats all I got for ya sorry... good luck tho!:D

No expert, but
 
i was told to have them removed as soon as the other set came in. my vet and others said food debris get stuck between the teeth causing not only bad breath but gum problems. i had to have emmy's removed. we dropped her off that morning (with an empty tummy) and picked her up that afternoon. she slept all the way home, ate, played shortly, and went back to sleep. the next morning, she was back to her old self.

All I can think of is hold him down and wiggle those suckers, like Diggy4 said.

I floss between his teeth so no food residue. His breath isn't bad, it just bothers me that they haven't come out yet. I try to wiggle them but I'm afraid I'll hurt him or something. I just don't want him to be put under. If I can avoid it at any cost, I want to. I don't agree with the teeth removal procedure because there's got to be a more comfortable way for them, then being put under. I just hate the thought of that.

He makes me feel like a puppy abuser, as does Coco when I try to do that to him. He gives me those sad puppy eyes and then sulks in a corner afterwards. I try to stay cheery and talk to him cutely while I do it. But he makes me feel like a bad mommy..:(

Good post. I have the same issue going on right now. Macey is 7 months old and has 8 too. I just went thru having Brodie's removed while under and I didn't like it at all.

Macey is the same as yours. she doesn't play tug of war.

Your lucky he will let you floss. Macey struggles to let me near her teeth and her breath is sometimes yucky.

I'll have to try the wiggle thing - but she freaks when I mess with her teeth.

You know, I had to get Hootie put under to get her last few teeth pulled and they gave her the ever so slightest bit of gas, got the teeth out surprisingly fast, and they let me take her home right after she was good and awake. I was only at the vet a total of 30 minutes. They definately don't use as much anesthetic as they do for other procedures (i.e. spay/neuter). So, if you DO end up having to get them pulled, it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

I have had 3 yorkies and have had to remove all their baby teeth.

Please go to the vet and let them do it. They do a cleaning and check everything at that time also including their anals.

Usually then they will put the pup on an antibiotic so there isn't any infection and a little pain reliever for afterward.

They are only 'out of it' for the day and back to normal in a day or two.

At least they won't have the truama of you going after their mouth and make him afraid of you.:eek:

Can you try wiggling them while you're flossing? If he'll let you floss, he probably lets you brush his teeth too, so try wiggling it then too.

honestly i think you should just have him go to the vet to get them pulled. its not healthy to leave them in there. bacteria can build up and an infection can start. healthy teeth are part of a healthy life. infection in the mouth can spread to other areas like his blood system and heart.

teeth pulling isn't bad at all. it take no time at all and it rarely causes them a problem afterward. morgan had 6 teeth pulled when she was spayed.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will not be taking him to the vet to put him under when this is something very natural and normal. In time they will fall out, I just needed to know if there's anything I can do to speed it up. I brush and floss his teeth daily so no bacteria or infection or even bad breath. I will just continue to wiggle them and give him more stuff to chew on. My girls' fell out at a year and she was fine, no infections :p I guess I'll be waiting. He actually let me play with his teeth tonight for a while, so I guess that's good. :D

You could have him neutered and the teeth extracted at the same time. Don't worry, he will be just fine, but leaving the baby teeth in will cause some problems with how the bite ends up. He could have serious problems if the teeth don't line up correctly..

If you find a vet that is familiar with toy breeds, putting him under should be safe. All good vets do pre-anesthetic bloodwork now to make sure it's safe to put them under. Most vets will pull retained baby teeth when you have him neutered. I'm surprised your girl's came out on their own after that long. That doesn't usually happen. My boss has a 3.8lb yorkie (1 1/2 year old) who still has one baby canine and it's gotten pretty gross. She's about to get her spayed soon and have that tooth pulled at the same time. I had Lacy's 4 baby canines pulled out when she was about 7 or 8 months. She was just fine. I'll probably be getting her teeth cleaned this August as well.

I commented earlier about Ada and her teeth. Well my sister felt the same way you did and worked and worked and worked at it. Ada ended up with an infection....we didnt know until we smelled it,(it was nasty)...this infection must have been there sometime without us knowing it for it to smell that bad before reaching the surface...it was underneath her baby teeth. We still are not sure if the infection passed to the permanent teeth. This can cause major damage and your baby will end up under a lot longer then if you just get them pulled. The other yorkie in our family same thing she waited....and her babys infection ended up in her heart! They thougth she had an enlarged heart but come to find out if was from her tooth infection that had no smell, no signs......she ended up lethargic and a very sick girl. I had my Bellas done at 6 months....I have never had a problem and she ate the night I brought her home. SHe had around 10 pulled including canines. These are just my experiances with this. Good luck with your baby and i hope everything works out well for her.;)
