Help...asap please Chloe hasn't eaten anything since yesterday morning (pre-op instructions) and I'm worried about her getting hypoglycemic so I'm going to wake her up & try to give her a bit of something. We don't have actual karo syrup, but we have regular corn syrup (bee hive brand) and we have honey. Which one is better to give? Thanks :) |

Thanks so much. She got spayed & had 4 teeth pulled today...she's okay, I guess, but she's SO pitiful & in so much pain. She wasn't supposed to eat past 6 pm last night, but she only ate about a Tbsp yesterday morning & that was it for the day (that's pretty much her norm). Then today she hasn't eaten, at all. |
Are you able to get Nutrical in Ontario? That would be the best, but you might have to open her mouth and put in on her tongue. You can do the same with the honey and she will swallow. Poor little baby. Please give her a big hug from us........ |

Nope, no Nutrical here :( I was able to "poke" her with the honey, but most of it just got stuck in her beard right around her lips. I'm going to try again in a little bit. We're having chicken for supper, too, so I'll try & con her into eating some of that. |
Please give her a (gentle) hug from Max and me. If you can get her to drink, try to put a little sugar in the water. I once took a medicine syringe and shot water into Max's mouth very slowly because he wasn't eating. |
Awe, I hope little Chloe feels better soon. Emma just got spayed about a week and a half ago and is just now getting back to her perky self. Big hugs to Chloe! |
Chloe I hope you feel better tonight and eat something, is she drinking water? You could add a little sugar to her water if she'll drink. If not I'd try to get some honey on my finger and gently rub into her mouth...I have found putting it on the roof of her mouth is less messy, and it will get into her system pretty quick. It doesn't sound like she's a very big eater to begin with so I wouldn't push her too hard, it may upset her belly. Good luck...and best wishes for a really speedy recovery. |
As others suggested, definitely try to get her to at least drink water...And you can put sugar or honey in the water to keep her blood sugar up...I'm praying for little Chloe. Eat for your mommy!! :) |
I've been using the tiny (only goes to 1/2 a CC) syringe that the vet gave me for pain meds to squirt water in her mouth. She will take about 2 syringes (1 CC) and then give up...then she'll do it again in about 30 minutes. So, technically she is drinking, but it's really nothing. I tried the honey again with no luck. I tried a little sugar, but with the amount of water she's taking there's not really any sugar going into her anyway. I tried chicken, but she won't take that either. I gave her all the hugs that were sent & lots of kisses :) She DID take those  I know she's in a lot of pain, but they told me I can't give her any meds until breakfast in the AM. |
syringe feed Daisi was sick and would not eat. The vet gave me some canned food that ws easily slurped up in to a syringe. I fed her by squirting a little bit at a time into her mouth. You could call the vet and ask about that? or try making some canned food really soft put it on a spooon and into her mouth. If you have a syring try squirting a little into her mouth. If she is too sick to swallow I'd take her to the vet right away. I also think karo syrup is better than honey. Honey can contain boctulism. Drs warn against giving it to babies. I would put the syrupon m finger and rub it into her mouth. |
Here is a post I found on hypoglycemia, but it will also work to get her interested in eating again. Hope this helps! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58036 |
Is she eating yet? Ohh I hope she feels better |
I hope she's eating better by now...poor Chloe...:( |
How is Chloe today? Poor little girl - maybe her throat was sore from the surgery. I pray that she is feeling better and eating on her own. |
Thanks, everyone! She drank a little bit this morning and ate about 4 or 5 pieces of kibble. I put sugar in the water before she drank, though, so she at least has something in her. She went back to sleep and is pretty out of it still, but at least she was up a little bit. She was up most of the night with pain, but I wasn't able to give the meds until breakfast this morning - I felt SO bad, she kept staring up at me telling me she hurts :( After I gave her the meds this morning she went to sleep. She was chewing on my finger earlier, I think her mouth is really bothering her. I tried putting honey on my finger when she was chewing, but once she smelled the honey she stopped chewing. |
Nutrical. I think you said you cannot get Nutrical in Canada?? Can you order it on the net maybe??? Its really good to have on hand for things like this. If you cannot get it on the net....If you want I can mail some to you??? Let me know. |
Is Chloe better today? Is she eating any more? what about some baby food? i always keep a couple of jars on hand. |
:D :D :D She ate! :D :D :D After trying honey, corn syrup, plain sugar, sugar water, apple juice, carob chips, yogurt chips, white chocolate chips (after reading that it was safe for dogs), yogurt, cottage cheese, hard cheese, vienna sausages, baby food, gatorade, peanut butter, etc..etc..etc.. She ate three little baby bites of McDonald's ice cream!!! :D She's back on her princess pillow now, passed out, but at least I know she has a little sugar in her. No idea why I didn't think of ice cream before!? D'oh! |
When I picked up Angel today, the instruction sheet I came home with said to feed her only small amounts for the next couple days and to not be surprised if she doesn't eat for a day or two. So, it sounds like Chloe is doing just fine!! Angel is pretty mellow today also. She doesn't appear to be in any pain. I have been holding her all day to keep her calm and Sissy from jumping on her!! Her appetite is not suffering, however!!!! Give Chloe some more hugs from us and let her know that Angel, especially, feels her pain!!!!! |
The eating isnt so important tonight, her little mouth is probably sore. You do have to make sure she stays hydrated. Put some honey in some warm water and see if she will drink that , the warm water might feel good on her little mouth. Maybe some chicken broth. Try even giving it to her with a spoon. Thats the way I got Max to drink when he had dental work. She will be fine. |
Any time that my Toto has absolutely refused everything ... she never ever turns down fresh chicken broth! She will lap that up as long as there is any in her bowl. I simply boil chicken off the bone, strain it a couple of times to remove all the fat, cool it and "snap", she is ravenous! Hope little Chloe will be feeling better soon. |
