Question about Royal Canin I just switched my puppy from Nutro to Royal Canin Puppy Formula (per vet recommedation) and she seems to be eating less lately. She loves the food but only eats once a day but before she would constantly eat all day. Now when I pick her up she feels like she weighs a ton (she currently weighs 4.3 lbs). Is the Nutro making her stay full longer? This is my 1st time posting to this site. :yorkietal I am truly amazed by all the Yorkie lovers out there. This is the 1st time I've ever owned a puppy and I am loving it!!! |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! How fast did you switch foods? Was it done in a day or two or over a longer period of time? |
I did not gradually switch her over to Royal Canin.I switched the dog food on Saturday and she ate the whole bowl of food which is something that she has never done before. I returned the old food back to the store cause I had just bought her a new bag of Nutro. She usually eats twice a day with the Nutro and RC. She didn't eat anything yesterday morning but she ate alot last night after running around outside. So far she hasn't eaten anything this morning. Oops...I meant is the Royal Canin making her stay full longer?? |
I really have no idea if the RC is making her feel full longer ( I guess it could) but if the food switch wasn't done gradually (over 4-5 days at the minimum) she could be bloated (making her feel heavy) and have a stomach ache or cramps (making her not want to eat so much). I am definately no expert I just know when my Yorkie gets into another dog's food, she bloats up and doesn't feel right for a few days. Maybe someone else on here will have other suggestions. How much RC is your doggie eating a day (1/2 cup? 1 cup?)? |
Changing Foods Hi, I'm no expert, but I worked in the veterinary field for 8 years as a tech assistant/receptionist. Any time you want to switch foods, it has to be done gradually so that there isn't any problem. You first want to start off 1/4 new with 3/4 old for a few days, then 1/2 & 1/2, 3/4 with 1/4 old, etc. I suspect that your puppy was eating so much of the new food because it was something different for a change, just like people would welcome a different taste rather than the "same old thing". My vet, who happens to be one of the doctors that I worked with has recommended Royal Canin puppy mini bits for my new puppy. I'm feeding him 1/4 cup two to three times a day, depending if he's interested. I switched him over with no problems. I hope this helps you somewhat.:animal36 |
Welcome to YT! :D I agree that your problems are stemming from the fact that you abrubtly changed her food. Yorkies have such tiny bodies that it is vital to gradually switch their food... Wait a few days and see if everything goes back to normal. |
