How To Speak the "Yorkie" Language... I have found that the fastest, most efficient way to communicate with my dog is to speak his language! (Not in every circumstance but...definitely a good few.) So, how have you learned to speak "Dog" language? I will tell you one thing I've learned, and if you have learned anything, add it on to this thread! Then we can all learn how communicate better with our little friends! When Sully gets too close to the food I'm eating while sitting on the couch, I snap/bark at him. I'll make a mean growl and bare my teeth at him! It's SO funny because it only takes once and Sully will back up, totally understanding of what I just told him in "dog" language, haha! |
Well, I tried yelping when Trace nips me. Didn't work, seems to turn on his killer instinct and just bite harder. Maybe I should GROWL at him :D |
A pet trainer once told me to correct a dog do what his mother would do...pull up on the back of his neck. (Mom would bite him there, but I'm not about to do that) It really does get their attention and it doesn't hurt them. |
When Desi nips at me I start to wimper and cry, she immediately releases and looks at me like "Mommy, I'm sorry !!" |
Because Rusty was only 6 weeks old when I got him, I noticed that he smacks his lips when he was getting ready to go to sleep, so I would smack my lips and he would instantly snuggle to go to sleep. I also yawn and make sure he sees me yawning in stressful situations as this shows him that there is nothing to be concerned about, ie: thunderstorms, sirens, etc. If he was being a naughty boy, I would grab him by the scruff of his neck and give him a little shake, just like his Mom would do. One of my books talks about these as being doggie language and it works. Growling a low growl is "back off buddy" in their language. A high pitched happy voice creates excitement. A calm voice creates calm. I would also pretend to lick him by rubbing my nose on him like his Mom would do and he loves that! By doing that he knows I am his Mommy and I love him, LOL. |
Ive tried that.. but when I do it,, he gets all scared and runs to the window or door to see where the dog is.... |
I believe Schatzie is bi-lingual cuz when I want her to come I have to say "Here Kitty Kitty!"....So, this makes me think she can speak "cat" too. When I talk in her Yorkinese It sounds just like baby talk. :p |
