My turn to be scared! Our recently acquired male puppy, Avery, is going to be neutered tomorrow. I'm scared for him. He's definitely MY puppy; do you think he'll be angry at me? What if he doesn't want anything to do with me? Just this week he's started lifting his leg, so hopefully it will curtail that instinct a little. Our little Gracie will be spayed sometime this summer, too. Surgery makes me nervous! |

Avery will be just fine. He will be so happy to see you when you pick him up! He won't be mad either, he will be too excited to see his mama! I think surgery is hard for us because they are so little! Simon has had 2 surgeries not including his neutering and I am always a wreck. Give him tons of extra love tonight and kisses from us! |

I haven't had to go through it yet since Hefner came to me neutered and Chai is still too little IMO. I think the key is to have confidence in your vet, feel comfortable that he has an assistant to monitor the vitals and he is not conducting the surgery alone (some do this to save money), that his equipment is state of the art, that they do the pre-surgery bloodwork and that they use the proper anesthesia (isoflourene usually) for a small dog and that they give you the proper after care instructions and pain meds so you can keep him comfortable. If you prepare his place at home too before you bring him back you will feel bettter. Have a nice, quiet, dark place with clean, soft bedding and all the comforts he likes with a few extras. His favorite toy and blanket, something that smells like you and some onesies to put on him so he can't lick the sutures and doesn't have to wear the "collar". Hope that helps. We will be thinking of you. |

Surgery I made a newbie mistake and had Chloe spayed a little earlier than I should have and she got sick for a day. I felt so bad it was especially hard to have Lacey done because she is soooo tiny, about 3 lbs now at 10 months. I had a heart to heart with my vet and she told me she had even done hamsters! After the surgery, the vet told me Lacey had the smallest organs she had ever seen, but Lacey was up and about in a day. I had to really keep an eye on her to keep her from jumping on and off the couch. I think we all get a little nervous, I'll say an extra prayer for you both. |

Avery will be okay! Don't woory! My family felt the same way when we got Riley neutered, and I'm sure I'll have a nervous breakdown when TJ gets it done at 6 months. But, it's a minor surgery considering the vets do it all the time. And, I highly doubt Avery will be upset with you. Even if he is, once he sees you when you go pick him up, he will forget all anger and be overjoyed that he got his momma back! LOL! I am worried about TJ though. He is 11 weeks and 3.03 pounds. He went to the vet on Monday, and the vet said one of his testicles didn't drop. He said the other one was really small too. The vet said that his testicles are so small that they probably just keep travelling back and forth. He said the other one is probably going to drop, but if it doesn't, they will have to go looking for it when they neuter him and the surgery will be more serious. When he told me that I was seriously gonna cry! He is only 11 weeks though, so we have another 3 months for his other one to drop! I really hope it does! I will be praying for Avery tomorrow! God bless him. And, again, don't worry, Avery will be perfectly safe! |

Let-me-tell-YOU, I went through some major mental anguish and tears over getting Sully neuterred, when his time came. Sully went through the surgery with absolutely no problems or setbacks....but oh, my poor conscience just went crazy. I felt like I was torturing my baby! But don't worry, you'll live through it, and you're doing the RIGHT thing for your dog! He'll be healthier, happier and live longer because of it! |

Oh Thanks everyone. Avery is almost 6 months old and when he had vaccinations a couple of weeks ago the vet said he was ready to be neutered. I just HATE it...it makes me soooo nervous. We have a female, Gracie, who is almost four years old and I need to get her spayed, also. THAT will be even tougher. The vet told me if everything goes as planned, I can pick him up late in the day tomorrow. He doesn't have to spend the night. Thank goodness! He and Gracie wrestle, I guess he won't be up to it. I wonder if Gracie will be able to sense that she should leave him alone? |

I'll be thinking of you and Avery tomorrow and sending prayers your way, dont worry he will be just fine ;) my friend had her 6mo old yorkie neutered yesterday and she said he was running around like nothing happened today. |

That's a natural feeling. I felt the same way. However, two hours after we brought him home...he was back to himself! |

Hes going to be fine and WELL hes more scared of the doctor then he is of himself! |

Whew! It's over! Just as all of you predicted, Avery did wonderfully with his neuter. He's a bit sore and a little tired tonight, but I can fix that! I DO wish I'd bought a onesie for him, though, like one of you suggested. That would surely keep him from licking till it heals some. I might do that tomorrow. Thanks so much for the support! |
