2nd yorkie: male vs female? Hi all, I have a one-year-old yorkie female (spayed), and I want to get her a new playmate (which would also be spayed or neutered). I've read a lot about the male vs female issue on other threads, but what about when I'm bringing a second puppy into the home? Are there pros and cons to getting a 2nd yorkie of a different or same sex? Is my girl more likely to get along with a male puppy? Will either one make her territorial? Also, Kona is litterbox trained, can I litterbox train a male puppy, or will he still lift his leg after neutering? Sorry for all the questions, but I want to make the right decision! Thanks guys, staci |
I have a 13 years old Yorkie who lives most of her life alone , recently I have had the chance to have another one . This new addition never change Zsa Zsa except for the fact that she is happier than ever . I never regret having two . No matter what sex you'll choose , the puppy will always be happy to please you . |
I have a male and a female. I personally like having one of both. They are so different in personality. They get along well. My male does not hike his leg. I am getting him neutered next month so I hope he does not start. Good luck. |
I have a 1 year old male and just recently got a female companion for him. Tino was neutered 6 months ago... he never lifted this leg before he was neutered and still doesn't. (As far as I know he has never officially "marked".) Bunny is almost 5 mos and she will be spayed when she is big enough. From my experience.. I LOVE having one of each! The male peronality is so sweet and loving and then my female is just the fiesty-est and bossiest thing I have ever seen. She's been here two months and she runs the place! Its soooo funny to watch this thing that weighs 2lbs strut around here giving marching orders to everyone, including ME! Anyway... I was unsure abt whether to get a male or female when I was adopting my second and for the most part everyone rec'd male/female combo. I have heard that with two males you run the risk of marking issues even if you never had them before. And with two females you have to worry about both of them trying to be the Alpha. So in a nutshell the way someone explained it to me was male+male=marking; female+female=migraines!!! These are, of course, not absolutes bc there are many people with two of the same sex and they get along great! |
thanks a lot guys. this whole website has been really helpful! staci |
With my first two I went to get a puppy and was lucky they had females and males, all were cute but Maddie won me over, with the second Rudy won me over, with the last one Polly, she won me over too. So I guess what I am saying you will know when you see your new puppy. |

Just get 2 more, a male and a female and then you have no problem. That would be my rationale to my husband when he came home and discovered two more instead of one! I just couldn't decide whether to get a girl or a boy so I got one of each! :lol tears :lol tears :lol tears Doesn't that sound logical???? |
Loves Kona, It surley sounds that male and female yorkies bond quite well in the same home so this should make it quite easy for you to decide. How fun on you adopting another Yorkie - more to love! :p |
Second yorkie, male or female Chloe is a happy and busy one year old. She and I spend a lot of time together since I am retired. However, I decided I wanted another one and chose another female, primarily because of what I perceived to be a marking issue. Lacey is 10 months and the breeder did ask me if I had another pet and how old, etc. She did not believe I would have a problem and I do not. They play non stop, get along fine. Well, that is until bedtime, when Lacey gets grumpy I know it is time for each to go to her own kennel. |
In my 26 years of breeding and owning yorkies, female/female pairs get along the best. I own both sexes currently but if I could get away with it, I'd only own females. Don't get me wrong, my 3 males are just adorable, but when ya get them together, the females try to boss the males around. Good luck deciding :) |
I have two males. They get along well, but they do fight a little considering we just got the new puppy a week ago. They don't hurt each other or anything like that. My 9 month old Riley is litter box trained and he occasionally lifts his leg, but he still makes it in the box most of the time. When he doesn't make it in the box, its not because he lifts his leg, its because he only puts his front paws in the box. I don't think all males will do this, but my two do because my new pupy has started to imitate Riley. Good luck! Let us know what you choose! |
I don't have but 1 yorkie but I think either would be fine. I think some people have problems with 3 - 2 girls, 1 boy - 2 boys, 1 girl. The majority gang up on the minority. So I think you need 3 more - 2 of each. :p Wouldn't that be fun!!! :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork |
What a great idea! Your yorkie is gonna be so happy when you bring home her new companion :D I know a lot of people with 2 girls that get a long great and some have 1 female 1 male that get a long great, I think your yorkie will be happy either way you go. I have 1 female and 1 male, they get a long great. She bosses him around and he likes it, a perfect match :luvu: |

aww your two furbabes are soo close together! they are so cute!! :p Whatever gender you decide, loves Kona, I'm sure you'll love him/her! I first got Oreo and he was lonely, so I got Ginger when Oreo was 4 months (Ginger was 4 months at the time I got her).. And I just added Cloey to our addition and Oreo & Ginger are 6 months old now. So that makes me have 1 boy and 2 girls. They all love each other and have so much fun playing with each other.. Good luck with your decision! |
