Too Small to Breed? Hi All, I have two yorkies of my own that are both fixed. My sister currently has a female that is only about 2.5 pounds and new boy who is also quite small. She plans to breed them. I remember reading somewhere that the female is too small to breed. Is this true? My sister doesn't believe me. Also someone told her that she couldn't breed the male until he is a year old? True? Thanks so much, Kathy |
You are right on both. 5 lbs is the smallest you want to breed |
babies You might wanna ask this in the breeding section. From what I have read on here and in other books...2.5 is way too small to breed. I would question spaying a baby that small let alone putting her through babies.....I have also heard that generally the male should be smaller than the female so smaller than 2.5??? Thats just too small IMO. Im no expert I'd just be scared to death for my fur babies life. My Bella is 5.something and 2 years old....I look at her and think whoa no way would I breed her toooooo tiny. If I were a breeder Id have me a 7 lb girl and a 5-6 lb male breed them and the babies are sure to be small and very desirable to those seeking the smaller end of the breed. Again I'm just a dumb yorkie ma....lol |

Just out of curiosity...My Bella (spayed) is approx 5.5 I know that is very average weight and said to be okay for breeding but she is just tiny framed. She weights that and I still call her a teapot cuz she is a lil on the "healthy" side lol Does frame factor into breeding also?? Id say she could easily weight 3-4 and be far from unhealthy if you know what i mean. |
I know if they are too small framed they may not be suitable for breeding either. I think a good Vet can tell you if they are |
Not to hijack your thread with my question....but I figured the answers may also help you out also encase your sisters dog has a bigger frame and may put on weight. |
curious I was just wondering out of curiosity...my sweet bella is spayed :p I do not want anythign to do with breeding a girl Id stress myself to death....I worry about other babies on here like crazy SO I thought the answer may help out Kathy. Plus just wondered. Thanks for replying! |
She is a tiny frail dog. |

Oh my goodness !! No !! that is WAY TO SMALL TO BREED !! The smallest should be 4.5lbs or 5 lbs....nothing smaller than that !! she is risking her little girl's life to breed ?? Shame on her !! She needs to do more research before she even think about breeding her baby girl....such as the complication that she could have while she is prego & during labor...etc *shaking my head* i could go in more details but i won't....just please tell her not to breed that small of a female...:( |
http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82382 Here is a thread about puppies, c-section and babies being too big. Heart wrenching but maybe will open your sisters eyes....her babies life is at stake here. Is she wanting to breed for the $$ or just do have more fur babies??? |
Way, way, way too small. No offense, but since she hasn\'t done her research on the deadly risks to her female, I doubt she\'s done the neccessary genetic testing and all the other research that is so vital to a healthy litter. Your sister is not ready to breed period, even if her female was larger. That tiny girl should be spayed to prevent any accidental litters that would probably kill her. Good luck convincing your sister! Its nice that you care so much! :D |
I completely agree. I have told her what you all have said. Hopefully she will listen. |
Everything I have read sayd they should at least be around 5 pounds or so, just like everyone else has said. My little Lola is 3 pds. and I would never breed her she is way too tiny. I had her spayed so there would be no chance of her ever getting pregnant. I hope your sister will listen to you and not breed that poor little baby. There is a good chance that it could kill her, or like someone else said you would have to have a c section and none of the babies survive. |
How much do her dogs mean to her? Has she bred in the past, other dogs? That answer is irrelevant to whether she should breed this size baby, however, becaause any way you slice it, the answer is NO. And if her potential mama is truely her companion, she has a huge chance of losing her during delivery, as well as the pups. |
