My pup is about 18 weeks old. I have done his grooming so far. I am keeping him short, but now that his awful puppy hair is gone and better hair has come in, I'm going to let it grow a little longer. My pup is very difficult because he is such a wiggly worm and hates having anything done. I know for a fact, he'd be a groomer's nightmare right now. There are many reasons I like grooming my dog right now. 1) He's small - and not too big a job to groom. 2) I can do it whenever I want. 3) It's free. 4) I don't have to do it all at once - can start today - finish tomorrow! 5) I can cut him the way I want him cut. 6) And - the more I groom him - the better I get. But - I have every intention of taking him to the groomer occasionally. I'm sure they can always teach me a few tricks. Carol Jean |
How often do yorkies have to be groomed if you keep their hair short? long? (I mean, I'm totally ignorant...once a week?! once a month?! once a year?!) |
I do my own. I do know a groomer though that has also been breeding for over 40 years...so I use her if I have the extra $$$. |

I groom my Yorkie and am keeping him short for now. I have read that some Yorkie's hair grows faster than others. I think a good rule of thumb is every 6 weeks or so ---until you find out differently - depending on your dog's hair. Since I do my own dog - I just trim him whenever I want to - I'm sure I trim him oftener than I would need to do if I were taking him to a groomer. And - of course, the shorter he is trimmed - the longer the haircut will last. Carol Jean |

My reasoning for thinking that her dog was sedated was from the above. My babies are tired when we get home, like yours but if they were not excited to see me when I picked them up, I would have to wonder what was wrong with them. I know my first thot would be that they had picked up a virus at the groomers. I don't know how sterile they keep a grooming shop but when my babies would act better later or the next day that is what I would attribute it to, a virus. I have often wondered if they sedated some hyper dogs or dogs they know bite or nip. I would hope if they were sedating dogs they would get permission. What would happen if your dog were alergic to what they were administering? Anyways, I have my suspicions. Sylvia |
Sylvia...I'd have to wonder too - Mine were very Tired after I got them home - but when I picked them up ....they would go BALLISTIC kissing and jumping on me....That's so scary to think some groomers would sedate them - If my girls ever go back - THAT is one question I'm going to be sure to ask! |
