** IMPORTANT: Are you Prepared for a BIG DOG attack?? ** I walk TJ and Roxy around our block. But I constantly have to be on the look out for big dogs, either just let out by their owners, being walked carelessly by their owners, or just random loose big dogs roaming the block. Me and Hubby are taking precautions for when I walk them alone. #1 Always carry the Mace/Pepper Spray #2 Always carry my cell phone #3 Always wear shoes that I can run in #4 Use a short lead (never use the expandable flexi type - I might need to grab them quick) #5 Keep looking behind me, all around me and down the road #6 Be ready to pick them up and run to the closest house I just got mine Mace/Pepper Spray in from Ebay. THIS should be a sticky, cuz it happens way too often:( Irresponsible dog owners abound:mad: I'm glad that you are playing it safe. I don't walk the girls (since Starr did get attacked by our neighbor's pit) I made DH build a fence and the only time they are on leashes is when we go somewhere in the car, like the vet or the park. |
great post never thought about that for a dog attack. Thanks! |
*WOW* thanks for the info babez !! :D |
I will take your suggestions. I carry Mace but that is all do. It is common in My neighborhood for dogs to be running loose. Luckily I havent came accross any while walking Chachi and Jewels yet but know it will happen |
Great post! I don't walk Jake on the street because there are no sidewalks where I live....it's kinda in the country. But, I have a huge 2-acre lot so we do the majority of our walking there. I've also taken him to a park, and that worked out good. I socialize him with our neighbor's dog, our friend's dog and my daughter's dogs, who are all bigger than Jake, but they get along fine. |
Hey, can I suggest Citronella rather than Pepper Spray? It's called Direct Stop and it's made by Premier. Not only is it safer for that other dog, but it is less likely they will get mad at you. Basically it doesn't hurt them but they just stand there and sneeze. I'll be carrying it on my website, but since that's not up yet (!!) you can actually buy the stuff at Petsmart. There is a big German Shepherd on the can. |
Thank you. I will look into the Citronella spray. |
I'm always on the look out for big dogs when I take my litlte guys for walks. I was almost attack by a rottweiller a few years ago. I didn't have Jerome back then, but I had Oscarito(rainbow bridge) and Chikis who is still with us when I saw those 100 and something pound dog coming towards us I pulled the leash and strted spinning/cause it was too late for me to run, but I figured spinning would make it harder for the dog to catch any of my babies or me, then I started screaming for help and someone came to the rescue and luckily, no one was hurt. It just gives me the chills to remember that incident.:( I think I would be getting the citronella stuff too. Thanks for the info though. |
This also applies to living where there are wild predators in your neighborhood such as coyotes. GREAT POST!   |

Good idea about the citronella. I carry pepper spray/mase for human predators and dog predators, but I should get some of that citronella so Wobie doesn't get hurt if I spray... |
Great post and thank you. Charlie was socializing with a small dog and large dog last week (all on leashes). The small dog latched onto his back, dug in his teeth and tried to carry him away. Little ones can be just as dangerous and have to admit it has made me a little too cautious. Charlie loves everyone but that was my first experience with a dog bite, and it was unpleasant. The spray is an excellent idea |
Great Post!!!! Gus is a surviver of an ugly attack. We were one of the lucky ones. It happened out of no where and it opened my eyes. It will be a day I will never forget and if I knew then what I know now maybe it would have never happened. I know that some people get very offended when it comes to their big dogs and I know some may think I over react when it comes to my actions when we are around big dogs. |
Thank for the great post!! I was thinking about buying a spray (hubby's advice too), I'll surely look for the Citronella spray. I already had 2 big dogs charge at Pepper, I stopped using the retractable leash and thanks to the short one I was able to lift Pepper quickly. I always look around and have been thinking what I'd do if a bog dog attacks - I'll run behind someone's gate or even wouldn't hesitate to jump on someone's car  |
