New to Yorkie Talk Hello Fellow Yorkie Lovers, I need HELP. I love my little girl Pita, but I am gonna pack her little bag if she doesnt stop barking!! It can be completely quite and we are sleeping in bed and she will start barking. It might just be one little bark, or it could be several barks. She doesnt even get up to do it. She just lays there and barks. I tell her "NO Barking" very stern and serious and she just stares at me and then barks in my face. Almost like she is saying to me "you cant tell me what to do lady !" She is so defiant! The thing that kills me the most, is that she is well aware of what "NO BARKING" mean. I tried the whole bowl and spoon action and it seems to work to a point, but I can really do that in the middle of the night. She is driving my family insane. Any suggestions?? |
hello and welcome,, i still have that problem with my lexi and she is 2 years old.. i think its eighter boredom or she hears everything and think shes protecting me... it drives me nuts tooo..... i try to get her so tired that she sleep through the night.... welcome to the wonderful world of yorkies.... they could be a handful |

How old is she? Like Gina mentioned try making her tired in the evening. A nice walk right before bedtime. Put a soda or beer can with pennies next to your bed and when she barks shake it at her. Use it during the day also when she barks unnecessarly. I find this works to a T. I never had the problem but hope it let's up soon for you. |
My Yorkie, Abby, used to do this all the time! I know this may seem silly but take an empty pop can, put some pennies inside and tape it shut. When she barks, toss the pop can toward her (DO NOT THROW IT AT HER!) (DO NOT HIT HER!), the sound shocks her and if you are consistant, it will normally break the habit. I created 4 pop can shockers (as I call them) so I didn't have to continue to get out of bed and retrieve the used one during the night. It took about 4 days but she quit. Everyone once in a while she would do it again but I always had that can sitting by the bed. It also works to break other bad habits on other dogs too! I had Golden Retreivers and Coton De Tulears and it works with them too! Good Luck! They are so worth the trouble! Angela |
welcome to YT...i am going thru the same type of problem...she doesn't do it much anymore in the house but once i let her outside and turn my back she will start barking her head off...at anything and everything...and fiancee is getting really sick of it... |
She is 7 years old. I will try the penny thing, and I really hope it works. I got her from my sister because she was in instigator at their house, causing their other dog to bark and always chasing the cats, which she still does at my house. She is a great little dog if it wasnt for the barking. She also barks like a crazed dog when she goes outside. She runs the parameter of the yard and then just zig zags it barking barking barking. She even barks when she is peeing! Its funny but at 11 at night....not so funny!! She NEVER barked at my sisters house. I just dont get it! |
My Marcel (6 mths) is doing this lately (and Wy did it much more when he was younger, he's now almost 3) in the middle of the dang night. It's almost as if he is seeing ghosts, truly. Sometimes though, these guys can pick up sounds and smells (coyotes in my neck of the woods) from outside and it really gets their instincts going. She clearly thinks she is responsible for everyone (alpha female) and needs to be taught "thanks for warning us, but we got it now". With Wy, we would literally thank him for protecting/warning us - pick him up (if we were near by), and soothe him - "it's okay now, we got it, that's enough". It shows them that they aren't responsible - you are - and though you appreciate the warning, it is up to YOU when they stop. So, if she doesn't stop after some soothing, that's when you do a more stern "that's enough!", "no bark!", or "no!" - and use the can. In the future, she may then consider stopping the behavior during the soothing stage rather than the can stage! |
Missy (yougetthesmiles) suggested banging a tin bowl with a spoon. I've tried it and it works pretty good. I just hit it once and say no barking. They may bark a couple more times, but then I bang it again and say no barking. There may be hope for these barkers yet...LOL |

My Izzy does that too, but it's usually on days when she hasn't been outside playing enough and is too "alert". I have to chase her around the house and wear her out and that seems to do the trick;) Funny that her name is Pita, that is so cute:) It also stands for Pain In The A##:laugh: |
strap a squirt bottle to your belt and load it with water!!!! Everytime she barks give her a squirt....:D |
Welcome to YT. I think the squirt bottle helps. Not really sure though because mine isnt a barker |
Gizmo has been doing this lately as well, and I found that the can with (marbles in my case) is working so far. I do it a little differently...I keep the can with me and I shake it when he starts and don't stop until he stops and do it consistently EVERY time. (That can be the hard part) He does stop after a couple of minutes and it seems that he settles more quickly each time. |

I am sure she hears things during the night and barks bc she is trying to protect you. Could you get some sort of sound machine thing to drown out background noise from outside?? Also, I know a water bottle works well...whenever she starts barking, squirt her in the face with some water and tell her "no bark." You could keep one by your bed and it would probably be more convenient than the pennies or the bowl things. |
Everyone has been so great in offering suggestions, Thank you. I would feel sooo bad if all this time she was just trying to protect us and Im getting mad at her for it. Her little 5 lb body sure doesnt tell her brain that she is smaller than my cat. For something so little, her voice is HUGE! As far as the squirt bottle....I've tried that too. She doesnt care if she is dripping wet...she will keep on a barkin!! My bed would be soaked by the end of the night. I will try the pennies tonight and see how it goes. Watch, she will sleep like a baby tonight!!! |

Hi and welcome!!! Congrats on the new baby! I can't be much help here because Jake isn't a barker. He will bark if he hears noises at night, but he will stop if I tell him it's okay. The key is to wear them out by either playing ball or something or taking them for a walk. That way, they sleep much sounder and don't hear every little thing. I'm sure she is just getting used to her new surroundings. Good luck! |

Mitzi barks at night once in a while when she hears something or the neighbors dog starts it. We found a great solution... we got used to it, tell her it's o.k. turn around and keep sleeping... :D :D :D Might not work for everybody though... I saw a show on "it's me or the dog" and the dog trainer said that such a dog is kind of insecure about the leadership and can't relax b/c he/she tries to protect everybody. There the solution was to bann the dog from the bedroom... well, that's not gonna work with a Yorkie, we know that for sure...;) |
