New mom needs opinions?? So I've had Sophie for a week now and at night I usually let her out every 2-4 hours to potty sometimes she doesn't always go but then I let her play and she drinks a little and nibbles a little on her kibble. then she goes back in for another few hours and this is repeated til I can get enough sleep. well I find myself sleeping til noon because I let her play each time because she is so hyped up to be out of her kennel. Well last night I didn't let her play just potty and back to bed for another few hours, and I didn't set my alarm this time I let her wake me up to potty...and she did. Now what do you all do at night (those of you who use a kennel)? or what do you think is the best, play or no play??? I just don't know what is best!!! Please help |
Hi there! I also use a kennel for my puppy. When I used to wake up in the middle of the night I would set my alarm to get up ONE time in the night (that is plenty IMO) and we would get up, put him in the bathroom and potty and back to bed. No play, drink, kibble, nothing. It was strictly to potty. Also, at Petsmart the trainer there said that if you give them time to "wake up" so to speak, then they think it's morning and time to play. So just wake up, hurry up, and get him out, potty, and back in. Hope this helps! P.S. Mine only had to do that for a couple months, and now he goes all through the night, but first thing in the morning is him pottying. I hope this helps! Good luck :) |
with my fur-kids...i normally never wake up in the middle of the night to let them out to potty...i let them out right before bed...and then again when i wake up...unless they need to go during the night and start crying or barking... this sorta train them in holding it imo because with dogs it is all about consistency and scheduling...they will get use to it...and most dogs will not go where they sleep or eay... hope that helps and good luck! |
Thank you so much, she is just such a ball of energy and seems like if I let her play all day she will!! I think I will continue with what I did last night, no play, drink, kibble, just potty and back to bed. Makes my night better for sleeping!!! |
Good luck with the training Emmy holds it through the night, usually from around 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. but then it is a mad race to get her outside!!!!;) |
I dont think I would be letting her play. Just put her out, give her some hugs and kisses and put her back in the kennel. She will learn that it is bedtime and not playtime. Keep us posted on how it goes!:aimeeyork |
You are on the right track! Kenneling is great for puppies, and it gives them a sense of security as well as a little "home" of thier own. as for the potty trick: I agree with the other posters- out to potty, then right back into bed...no playtime until morning! Good Luck Catching some zzzzzzz.... |
