How much do you feed them????? It didn't occur to me until umm..now, that maybe im over feeding the new pups. They are eating mushy puppy kibble, and i've been giving it to them every 2 hours. I thought I was supposed to do that because they fed off of mommy every 2 hours. When I weighed them my jaw dropped. All 3 are almost 2 pounds and they are only 33 days old. Am I feeding them correctly or should I be doing it differently? How often? |
I suggest following the amount show on the back of the puppy food. My vet and trainer told me that the amount they display is even higher than you should feed them! Some people just give a HUGE bowl of food to their puppies and let them eat as they please. My vet told me not to do this and to follow the amount shown behind the food. To give you an idea, my yorkie is a little of 6 months and is 11 pounds! I feed him 1 cup a day. It was less when he was younger though. He is big and 1 cup is enough of Royal Canine. Good luck! |

Yeah but this is tough. They arent even 5 weeks old yet. They were started on mushy puppy chow when their mommy refused to feed them (at 3 weeks old). Now all of a sudden she's letting them feed. Im trying to ween them and she's slowing down the process. They have no problem eating normal food but she keeps interfearing. Even after they eat all their puppy chow, they go to her and suck her dry. I dont get it. What can I do to stop her frpm doing this and should I only be feeding the pups 3 times a day? It cant be normal for them to be almost 2 pounds already... |
feeding I free feed pups that age...you don't have to worry about them right now..and later either. They will only be as big as they are genetically programmed to be...they might get a fat belly for awhile, but they will trim down once you feed dry only. Once they go to new homes they can eat 3 times a day just fine. |
Maggie's breeder fed her pups 3 times a day with mushy food, starting at 3 weeks old. She kept the babies seperate from the mama. She would allow the mama to go into the babies room at 9PM to sleep with the babies. Come day light, it was seperation time again. Getting one of these puppies for myself made Maggie's seperation from her mother a lot easier. She cried a little the first night, then it was Home Sweet Home. |
Dry and wet to just dry Ok.. here is another question for you all.When is a good time to go from wet and dry food to just dry?Ralphie is almost 6 months.. and I still feed him about a teaspoon of Pedigree morning and nite.. then I leave dry food down at will. The question is.. when should I stop the Pedigree and feed just dry? Any ideas? |

I'd hate to keep them seperate all day. What if I just keep a fitted t-shirt on her, or pj's? Then they wouldn't be able to get to the milk. Maybe that would work? |

That's kind of an issue. She only goes in the whelping box when she wants to feed them. Otherwise she wont go in there. At night, she sleeps on a down blanket next to my bed, prince sleeps by my feet and the pups are in the whelping box. I've tried so many times to put her in there with them but she wont stay. She hops right out. She goes in there if/when they start crying in the middle of the night from hunger. |

feeding At five weeks, they are not old enough to go all night without food. Mom is uncomfortable as the teats swell with milk she will want to nurse them. I have to separate my moms from the litter while weaning. They are in a pen and she can see them, I put a shirt on her and she can play with them, but no nursing. It is not a fun process for anyoen, but after a week everyone is happy again...although the pups will try and nurse for weeks even months. Mom will growl or move away, but even 12/14 week olds will try to get to the milk bar, it has long dried up, but they remember the "good old days"....good luck When they have teeth, you can leave dry out...they should have teeth popping through and they can chew with tiny ones..make sure the kibble is tiny in size..or soak it slightly, it doesn't spoil. |
They have teeth popping through now. Nowhere near a mouthful ofcourse, but enough where they can chew. I take purina puppy chow and soak it in water for 45 min. I then mush it and put it in the fridge covered. When it's time to eat, I scoop a bunch out on a paper plate and warm it in the microwave. They seem to prefer it warmed. It seems the wet kibble has been working but now I am once again confused as to how often to feed them. Do I keep feeding every 2 hours or "X" amount of times per day? So, it is ok for mom to feed them at night? She doesn't have a lot of milk. Some of her boobies dont have any at all. When they try and feed she usually pulls away from them. If she feeds them during the day it's because she wants them full so she can steal their wet food lol. So, how often do I give them the wet kibble? |
feeding At 5 weeks they do not need food every two hours. Since they are not scarey small try 4 or 5 hrs...and mom can stay another week I would think with no trouble. You can make the kibble less mushy this week..good luck |
Thanks Yorkierose. I started off with it being kinda soupy, but now its thick and slightly chunky. I make it a little thicker every day (but not a lot). So far so good. I'll feed them again areound 11pm. Can mom feed them during the night or should I set my alarm so I can do it? |
pups 11pm sounds good and mom can feed them during the night...at 6 weeks you can leave totally dry puppy kibble out at night..but if you fed them at 11pm and again at 6am I think they will be fine..it is the mouse size who need to eat so often. They are a bit like baby seals and live off the fat, then slim down around 6, 7 weeks... |
