Spay question My yorkie Mckenna is now 8 months old and 7 pounds and I want to get her spayed this summer. My vet was going to do it when she was 5 or 6 months, but when I asked how much it would cost I was told $500 or more depending on if they had to pull any teeth while she was under. Anyways, everyone I've talked to says that they've gotten their dogs spayed/neutered for much less at their vet office. A few of my friends have even gotten their dogs spayed at the local spca for a lot less at the low cost spay/neuter clinic. Is $500 too much to have a puppy spayed? Also, if I decide to go to the local spay/neuter clinic will they provide the same care as a high cost vet office? The price is not even my primary concern, I guess I've really been putting it off because I'm just worried about the horror stories I've heard about small dogs dying while under anaesthesia. Just thinking about it makes my stomach hurt. I don't know what I'd do if something happened to Mckenna. On the other hand, I've heard that problems can come up when dogs are not spayed/neutered. I'm sorry for rambling, but I've been putting this off and I could use some wisdom from other yorkie moms and dads. |
That is way too much for a spay and if i could get it done for a clinic for less I would before paying that. My vet charged $110 for Jewels spay |
My input- The concern that everyone has about taking there dogs to the SPCA or another low cost clinic is that your dog won't get the same personalized treatment she might at your vet....that at such a place she's just another number and not an individual. I've stepped in on many of these procedures at such places and the way I look at it is that's usually NOT true, and a positive way of thinking of it is that those facilities are much more used to dealing w/ spays and neuters of critters even smaller than your little McKenna. Puppies and Kittens that weigh far less than she does. So they're used (more experienced) w/ dosing smaller animals to do this operation than your vet most likely is! jm2c. ;) |
I got max done at the ASPCA mobile clinic. Its been one week and he is great, he was running around the same day he got neutered! they answered ALL my questions and were very very helpful in calming my nerves. his incision is completely healed and its so well done you can hardly see it! I totally reccomend them! It is free if you are low income (medicaid, foodstamps.welfare,SSI etc) if not a 25 dollar donation fee is what they ask. My puppy was 6 months and weights 2.7 pounds when he got it done here you can go here for more info: http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer...ro_nyc_cares01 |
thanks. the nyc aspca mobile clinic site says it's a first come, first serve basis and it's even cheaper, but I would hate to show up and be turned away. I think I will make an appointment for next week at the low cost clinic here in westchester. I will post again to report how it goes. |
Sharon, you both will be fine. *hug* Let us know your thoughts afterwards! |
Sasha was spayed just last Thursday. She had 2 teeth pulled, anal glands done, toenail's clipped and it was only $130.00. And a vet that is phenominal. |
