How much time do you spend a day playing with your yorkie per day? Shadow seems to be unable to stay still. As soon as I get home and in the morning when I get up he wants to play. No matter how much I play with him he still wants to continue playing. He loves to retrieve so I throw the ball a lot of times until he looks exhausted (about 15 mins) but that doesn't seem to be enough for him. I work and he stays home alone most of the day so I think this is the reason why he seems to be unable to stay still. I am just curious to know how much time should I devote to playing with him and how much do you play with your yorkie everyday? Thanks |
Well I stay home w/my furbabies so usually if I'm busy cleaning or can't have my immediate attention on them, they are in their doggie "room" (2 superyards hooked together) playing with toys.. but I'd say I go throw balls, cuddle, play tug about 10 mins every hour that I'm busy and can't be with them. They get walks twice a day, sometimes three times, and they spend some evening time with us while we watch tv. :) |
How old is your dog? It seems like Phoebe calmed down after she hit a year, and is content to lay by me at times now. She still loves to play, but isn't hyper about it anymore. Carson, on the other hand, is only 5 months and goes like an Energizer battery! deb |

Working full time I sat aside Buddy's time in the am between 6:30 -7:00 to sit on the floor and play with him. He retrieves we train and cuddle for that time. I read it is very important to do this with your Yorkie if you work full time. They need bonding time with you before you leave them for the day. We have been doing this for three years and he knows it's his time every morning and runs and get's his hedgehog right after his last swollow of his breakfast.:D I sit with my coffee and it's 1/2 hr together for us. At night when I come home he is attached to my leg like velcro:p for the rest of the night. |
I say get him a brother or sister !!!!! YEAH!!!!!! lol :yorkiesar :clapsmile |

1 Attachment(s) I agree - a brother or sister would be a good idea! My Zoe - who is 17 weeks old & I've had her for 4 wks, is not the most active pup. Actually, she's perfect for our family. I do work 3 days per week outside the home so she is left for about 6-7 hours those 3 days. I walk her every evening (for the most part) for 45 minutes to an hour. I do have another dog and for the hours that we are home she spends a lot of time chasing her around and playing with her toys. She usually comes to me around 8 or 9 in the evening and drives me crazy until I pick her up and then she just snuggles in my lap and goes to sleep. Sometimes I am busy working on the computer but who could say no to this little face? :p Theresa |
My 2 are so different I have 2 boys from the same litter, they are almost 2 years old. One is content to sleep on my lap all day! The other though, he is a bundle of energy still. He cannot sit still for a minute! When he finally does sit down, every little noise sends him rocketing off the couch or bed barking up a storm. I play fetch with him everyday for at least 15 mins until he stops and then we play on the floor and do tricks and Im always giving them tons of attention, but he is never tired it seems! :D I walk them for a 1/2 hour at night after work when the weather is nice, they love to walk and they sleep good when we go to bed, but even after the walk he wont settle down until we actually go to bed. Even though you can tell hes exhausted! |
during the weekdays i play for about 15 minutes with lexi throwing her toys, but i do walk her for about 1/2 hour when i get home for work... i try to keep her busy so she wont keep me up at night... the weekends i try and take her with me where ever i go so at night she sleeps like a baby...its really exhausting for me sometimes.. |
I take LullaBelle for a walk in the morning (weather permitting) and I like to make it a long one, about 1/2 mile for her is enough to get her tired out and then I get ready for work. When I get home I fix supper, then if she wants to play tug o war, or fetch my hubby and I take turns. Then she will nap for a while. Then again she is over a year old. |

I am afraid another dog will be too much for me. But trust me, I have thought about it plenty of time. |
Wobie and I walk 2-3 times a day, which amounts to 4-6 miles a day (Wobie walks until he gets tired, and then I carry him). He's still a puppy, so he wants to play a lot, and I probably spend several hours in total on the ground with him playing. |
I suggest walking, it seems to have worked for several people here. |

Adie gets about 10 - 15 minutes of wrestling with me before we get up for the day then we play fetch for about 30 minutes at night. My husband is disabled and home all day so she gets to go outside and run all over the backyard several times per day. He will play fetch with her for about 10 minutes twice a day. She is usually a pooped puppy by 8PM and ready for a full nights sleep. |
not enough...and i feel bad...with work, moving, and everything else...but i know once i settle in i will make it all up..kkeke |

the week when I work. He also gets walked 4x daily at least 20 min each time. I don't consider that play time though. One on one to me is play time. In the evening it's throw the ball from the recliner and playing on my lap watching TV. |
At 6 months, he's got a lot of puppy energy. Walking him is the best thing you can do for him, it's good exercise for you and it can be so relaxing. Playtime has to be set by you - how long do you want to play with him? I read somewhere that 3 times a day for about 15 minutes is enough for an adult dog. For a puppy, they just want to play all the time! |

As much as she wants!!!:) |
I don't spend that much time playing with Buttercup. My husband usually does because I'm in college and when I'm away from campus, either I'm studying, taking care of my 4-year-old son, or cleaning up his mess. Although, I do spend a lot of time cuddling with him. Does that count too? |
Summerlin is almost 7 months old, and I play with her for about 10-15 minutes in the morning before I go to work. I come home at lunch at least two days a week, just to play with her :) And at night, I spend about an hour playing fetch and chase with her. The rest of the time, she just lays around on me - where ever I am. I have come home and caught her sleeping on the arm of the couch - so that is why she is always full of energy when I get here! :D |
GiGi and I spent time in the mornings and after the kids go to bed. I also come home everyday during my hour lunch! We nap together too, if that counts!!! |
