Giving Dog Treats Hunter is 8 weeks old and using the potty pads but still goes on the carpet. When he goes on his potty pad is it ok to give him a dog treat for training since he is only 8 weeks old. Or should I hold off on treats until he is a little older. |
Giving a treat is fine, but make sure it is low in protien, because too much protien will harm a yorkie of any age. I use cheerios for treats. |
Huh? Absolutepositively give your puppy a treat everytime he potties in the right place! Dogs are not born with any idea that they should go one place and not another. The idea that they should is totally a human invention. So the only way to communicate that going in one spot is better than going in another is to give them an incentive to do it. The incentive for animals is a reward of some kind and food is a primary motivator for animals. So the fastest way to communicate with your puppy about what your wishes are is to give a treat when he does the right thing, and withhold it when he doesn't. |
Oh definitely give him treats when he potties in the right place because that's how he will learn. He's soooooo young, so he needs to be praised and praised and praised when he goes on the pee pad. Like Anna said, Cheerios make great treats! Good luck! |
Ditto with the cheerios--Emmy loves them! Good luck with the potty training--we have not been extrememly successful with it, but are doing better!:) |
