Feeling a little guilty about Bil-Jac??? I did a search before I posted my question and I still need answers! Our breeder used Bil-Jac and suggested that we stay with it. Now, I have read both positive and negative things about Bil-Jac, and I would like to know if anyone, or your vet, has an opinion on this brand of puppy food. I want to give the best to my Rocky and I am starting to question the nutritional value of Bil-Jac! Pros or Cons, anyone? Thanks! |
As a general rule I simply look at my dogs are they thriving are their coats glossy with no scurf, are they energetic without being OTT if all those things apply and they eat the food happily relax and enjoy your dog. Cause I'll bet to him/her having a happy relaxed mum is what matters most :) |
I agree with Juli, of course we want our dogs to eat the best food we can feed them but it is just impossible if they don't like it. I used to feed Biljac way back in the day when it was one of the best foods you could buy. I have never had a problem with my dogs eating it and they always looked good. I feed my GSD a food that we buy at Sams club because he looks great on it, when I got my little Rio I tried giving him everything from RC to wellness, he didnt like any of the premium foods. He liked the GSD's food and he still eats it to this day. he has a beautiful coat, healthy skin and is in great shape. I doubt I will change it because it is too hard to get him to eat anything else. I feed Mignon Blue Buffalo but I bet she eats just as much of the GSd's food as she does that. If your dog looks good and is eating it what more can you ask? These little guys can be very picky. |
I finally gave up trying to figure out what Maggie wanted to eat. I purchased RC33 and some Bil-Jac. I was shocked to see that she liked both, so I just mix them together. |
Bil-jac An old dog breeders saying..."if it ain't broke, don't fix it"...I have fed Eukanuba and Bil Jac for decades...my dogs are healthy and seldom see the vet for anything except rabies, dental or whelping. If they found out those companies have been scraping up "road kill" and putting it in the food, I would still feed it...they love it and are healthy. |

Pat- Bunny's breeder uses the exact combination that you mentioned! She gives the Eukaneuba and then at night she adds a handful of the BilJac Select to the kibble. I asked her about why she adds the BilJac at night and she said it was for their coats. |

I have used BilJac as long as I have been breeding.. My biggest reason in the beginning was that a Yorkie puppy who was left alone in a utility room (whilst owners worked) and was free fed, choked to death on one of the roundish kibble brands. Scared the bejeebees out of me.. I mix 1 part RC28 with 2 parts BilJac in an airtight container. I always have dogs of different ages and have found that all ages do well on that..I measure the days amount of dry food into a plastic bag and add about 1/4 can of canned puppy food. Moosh it all together and feed about 2/3 in the morning and the remainder in the evening. I am currently feeding 2 puppies age 5 months; 3 Biewers under a year and 2 adults and every single critter is happy. I am a bad mommy about human snacks so I will not admit any guilt in that dept.. |

Any particular brand of canned puppy food? I am already feeding the RC and Bil Jac. I usually mix them too, but add warm water. Maggie likes it sometimes, but maybe a little canned would help. |
I've never hear of Bil-Jac? Where do you buy it? Brutus was eating Iams puppy until he came home and then refused it. Now he eats Nutro Max puppy and likes it but I think he'd rather have what we're eating and I'm not starting that! |
Carolyn- Nutro is a very good food! Oh if only I had been as smart as you and never given them our food! If I could change anything, that would be it! |

Carolyn- I agree with LVMyYorkie Nutro is a great food. |
I feed my litte Zackster Nutro Ultra Puppy Food. He seems to like the taste. I give him carrots and boiled chicken every now and then for treats. He likes apples and peaches but not bananas. There is a supplement called Halo Dream Coat...good for their skin. I put a tiny bit in Zacks food every other day. http://www.nutroproducts.com/ncup.asp |
Coats are not fed they are breed. Mix your Bil Jac with another good dry food. I mix with 2 others to make a kibble. It works very well. Bil Jac was origianaly formulated for the movie screens. Actors were complaining when the dogs messed on the movie sets it stunk. So they made Bil Jac.Ken Wheatherby originated it. He was the trainer for Lassie and RinTin Tin.It was only in Hollywood then in the 80's they released it to the public. |
My buddy who lives german shepherds (he is very big into them, deals with importing them, eats, sleeps, dreams and well lives sheps) feed his dogs strictly bil-jac. He does all the right things for his dogs even cooks food for them. I have faith in him 100pct so I am sure it is an excellent food. He has it shipped right to his door he had 13 sheps last time we spoke, but 6 were waiting to go to new homes (puppies). The people who bred Dixie feed eagle pack, I read its a real good food. I had to buy a bag of eagle pack dry & 6 cans for her when I got her (their rules or I'd have just gotten her nutro). I swear by Nutro, both cats & my 4 big dogs all are on nutro max. Cha Ching my siamese has a sensitive belly, vomits everything except nutro. I have been mixing Dixies eagle pack dry & canned with nutro. I was going to wean her off the eagle but after researching it it does sound like a really great food. Giving her 2 months with things as they are then will decide. May keep her on both. If your dog likes it, is healty, hair looks good-no reason to feel guilty. |
From what I can tell I think Nutro is one of the best foods out there. I feed my big dogs Nutro Ultra senior and they absolutely love it. I plan on feeding my new puppy the Nutro ultra puppy. The food seems to be very healthy and has the things they need. |
Just a reminder for those of you using Eukanaba or any other Iams product. They use live dogs for experiments and are not kind to them, inhumane conditions, etc. :( |
Thanks, everyone! I just had a little panic attack! lol....I think I did this all of the time when my daughter was born! I think we will stick with Bil-Jac and maybe find something to mix in! Oh, and thanks, spydergurl for the reminder! I am totally against using live animals for any kind of experiments! |
Yes they do us them for experiments. When you call them they sugar coat the whole story....."Oh go look at our other website. It shows how we really take care of the animals." "OH I GUESS YOU EXPERIMENT ON THE ANIMALS OUTSIDE ON THE GREEN GRASS WITH CHILDREN PLAYING WITH THEM! haha!SURE THEY DO"!!!!!!!!! When I grocery shop I usually have post its handy and hang them on the IMS food. :) DON"T BUY IMS! THEY TORTURE ANIMALS! One day I'll get caught. hehe...Such a rebel! ;) |
