Wow, I'm relieved to hear that she was crying and sorry....and that you were open-minded enough to believe her sincerity. Even if there was originally any smaaaaaaaall bit of malice in her mind when she originally did it, it sounds like the reality of the pain her action put the dog through was a wake-up call for her. You could actually use this experience to be a bonding experience between the child and the dog....and you and the child! Since she IS young, I'd take her aside and say, "I believe you when you say you didn't mean to hurt Annabelle, but you DID....so now you need to make sure Annabelle knows that you didn't do it on purpose. You can show her that you do love and care about her by treating her very gently from now on, and always thinking about how fragile and easily hurt she is"....etc! I don't know exactly what your situation (and the relationship between you and the daughter!) has been so far, but if the child develops a strong relationship with your dog, that you support in a positive way, this could really improve her attitude about living with you in lots of other ways!! |

I know how you feel about this. Some years ago we had friends round and their 8 yr old daughter wouldn't leave my Heidi alone..treating her like a toy, I was losing my patience and her parents were too busy drinking in my kitchen to keep an eye on their children, I found her 'holding' my baby down with the duvet on the bed up to Heidi's neck and she was wriggling trying to get out..i told her off for this and explained that Heidi obviously wasn't enjoying being held down like that...I went back into the kitchen to join our friends and before i know it my son who was aged only about 4 at the time, came running down the stairs screaming, i find my little Heidi lying at the bottom of the stairs, her eyes were rolling to the back of her head and minutes later she was sick. We called the vet out and they kept her in overnight, luckily there was no harm done...boy....was i angry! it appears the girl was carrying Heidi down the stairs when she had wriggled to get free from her and fell the rest of the way. Her mother then tells me that that is the reason why they don't have pets...because they once had a budgie and the girl squeezed it to death!!!! We then fell out with the parents when they refused to contribute to the rather large vet bill even though they said they would. GGGGGRRRRRR! |
