Healing band? Did anyone use a healing band/belly band (or something similar) after a spay? What'd you think of it? I don't want to knock anyone's products, but to me it seems like it would trap bacteria & cause infection. I would prefer a onesie, but I'm not sure I'd be able to find one small enough to fit Chloe?! Even the preemie sizes look really big... |
I bought onesies for Max when he was neutered. I was going to cut them so he could poop and pee, and somehow rig them so they would fit. He really didn't need them though. How large is the spay incision? It's probably more invasive than neutering. I had a female cat who was sent home from her spaying in a preemie undershirt and it worked really well. |

I put onesies on Emma when she was spayed, and it worked really well. She was about 5 lbs when she was spayed, and I bought the Gerber Brand newborn sized onesies. The trick to get them to fit well is to wash them once or twice in warm or hot water, and then put them in the dryer. They'll shrink quite a bit, and stretch to the size you need them to be. The generic brand sizes aren't as "true" to the weights they put on them-we have some of those too, and they're much bigger. Emma wears them (unbuttoned) as pajamas in the winter. I plan to do this with Milli when she gets spayed too, but I think I might need to buy the preemie size for her since she's still 3 lbs at 6 months. |
I actually used one for Milo's neuter---it really was to make it more difficult to get at his stiches than anything else. After a couple days he was over it.;) |
Sukoshi had her stitches inside the incision, so there was nothing for her to actually get at, but I put a little t-shirt on her just in case. She is small enough that the little t-shirt covered the incision, and that was enough that she couldn't get to it. But if Chloe is more curious and you think she'll be antsy to mess with the stitches/incision, then a full-length onesie is a good idea. I think maybe the preemie onesie, washed in HOT water and dried may do the trick. If it's still too big, I'm sure you could rig it up someway to fit. |
I made a small cotton/fleece "belly band" for Lula because she would just not stop licking the insicion and I didn't want her to have to wear a collar. I'd put it on her for a few hours, and she'd seem to forget about licking the stitches, then I would take it off of her and she'd be fine. I only used it when I felt it was really needed though, and I cleaned her stitches daily as well as using a cream they gave me, |
Thanks, all. I'll try the brand name onesies. I didn't pay attention to the brand I was looking at :rolleyes: If not, I guess I'll just have to hand-sew it to fit. Oh well :) I don't know if she'll try and get at them...but I do want something there to kind of help protect against any extra dirt getting in. So, I definitely want it loose so the bacteria doesn't get pushed in. I've got a couple weeks to figure everything out - thank God! |
We just use the e-collar when our dogs have had surgery. |
I bought a preemie onesie for Sadie and the vet gave me an E-collar. Didn't need either one of them, because she really never bothered with her stitches at all. Totally ignored them!! :p |
