The cicadas are here! and Adie Loves Them The chicago area is being bombarded by cicadas again. (the 17 year ones - meaning they come out every 17 years.)
An article in the newspaper said they are almost all protein and taste like almonds. (Wonder who tried that!) Anyway, Adie discovered that they are delicious and has been eating as many as she can get her little teeth into. She only eats the live ones. (Probably because they put up a fight.) They are perfectly harmless so I don't worry too much but it sure has made a picky eater even more picky. We decided we would feed her less meat and more veggies until they go away. It is useless to try to keep her away from them. The number hasn't come close to peaking yet so there are many more to come for a while.
They are really ugly bugs and very large. If anyone wants to see a photo I can post one. I have a picture of one in my hand and a bunch of them on a tree drying their wings before they can fly. They leave behind a hard nasty looking shell too.
The really good news is that no wildlife will go hungry this summer. I have seen all kinds of animals and birds eating them. We have three baby squirrels in one of our trees and they run up and down the trunk finding and eating them! Racoons love them too. |
