I need your help again!! Geez....what would I do with my life if everyday I wasn't caring for one of my babies!!? Gemma threw up again about 40 minutes ago. She had just gotten up, hadn't eaten yet. I gave her nutrical immediately. Then I tried various things to see if she'd eat...scrambled eggs with cheese, wet chicken dog food, yogurt, peanut butter, I can't remember what else. More nutrical. She will barely lick the peanut butter off my finger and same with the yogurt. not enough to make a difference. Did the same with the eggs, but lately I'm noticing her put a tiny bit in her mouth, taste it and spit it out ?? She was shaking so I have her on my lap wrapped in her blanket. What the heck do I do?? I don't want her in the hospital again - or every week for that matter! Is this hypoglycemia?? The breeder say hypo doesn't make them throw up? She was an excellent eater and now I'm finding she is very picky all of a sudden. I'm going nuts....suggestions?? |
Misha would throw up in the morning if she didn't eat right away. She is very picky. I tried everything until I started cooking baby carrots. She gobbles them up in the morning. She no longer has that problem as long as she eats right away after she wakes. I would try everything until you find something that's her favorite. Then feed that to her in the morning. Misha likes, chicken, broccoli, wax beans, green beans, ground beef, sometimes scrambled eggs with cheese. Frozen yogurt, yogurt drops for treat peas, cheerios, Eukanuba puppy treats, they are not the best but she'll eat them. She also loves baked pork chops. I have several books on home cooking for your pet & what they need. Try home cooking, Misha wouldn't eat her kibbles, so I started home cooking a year ago. It's pretty easy. There are 6 food groups for ballance. Hope you find something that works. |

She probably doesnt want to eat because her stomach is upset. Have you gave her some Pepto? I agree with your breeder II dont thnk hypoglycemia causes vomiiting. You should still give her nutrcal though since she isnt eatng. You might try giving her some baby food |
Oh my, I feel so bad for you and your baby! Poor honey. She has been tested for liver shunt during that last episode, right? How about trying something more "carby" like crushed soda crackers, some cheerios or some other cereal. Carby/starchy stuff will help settle the stomach and she'll digest it much more quickly than a protein or fruit/veggie. Btw, I do think dehydration can cause vomiting - I'm a runner and have experienced it. And, if you've ever attended marathons and/or competitive running - they get extremely dehydrated and vomit after races. Also, diarrhea can affect the whole system and can cause nauseousness, interestingly enough. |
Peanut also did this when he was little. The Vet said to give him a Pepcid Every 12 hours or when needed. Sometimes I would give him a Pepcid just before bedtime and the next morning he didnt throw-up.check with you Vet about the dose.It seem like everything upset his tummy even drinking to much water. Try giving her some bread.Maybe it will help with the acid in her tummy.I hope she is feeling better soon."Get Well Soon Little Gemma". |
When Otis gets an upset tummy he won't eat even the yummiest temptations. I'm praying for you and Gemma, hope you figure out what is going on with her. He will usually always eat some bread!! |

Fortunately, you don't need to do a serum test for Liver Shunt - in fact the Urine test is more reliable (and there is NO fasting!). I do hope it is negative, but at least you could rule it out for peace of mind. Go here: http://www.canine-epilepsy.com/bileacids.html You could def. try syringe water - or have you tried adding pedialyte or karo to her drinking water? Or add water to canned food? Did you try something carby - what about graham crackers? My heart goes out to you - I so hope you get to the bottom of this. |

I would suggest keeping Pedialyte and or Karo syrup in her water so she doesn't become hypoglycemic. Try boiling some hamburger and rice mixture for her and add cooked baby carrots to it. The baby carrots help make it naturally sweet. She needs to eat regularly in order to stay healthy even if it means syringe feeding her till she is okay eating on her own. Pepto will ease her tummy upset or crush up a Tums and add some of the powder to her food mixture. I wish you the best with her hun. Remember that Giardia can cause them to become anorexic. Sounds like this might be happening. Keep trying various foods. Gerber makes a chicken&apples that doesn't have any bad seasoning in it and because the apples make it sweet, she might like that. Even if she won't voluntarily eat it, it is not solid, so you could force some with a syringe. I hope she is better soon. |
My puppy got tested for liver shunts (blood drawn) without having to fast for a specific amount of time. However, she wasn't eating much anyway...but the vet just did a blood test and went through the results with us. Roo is fine luckily but I'd ask your vet about doing a blood test maybe??? (my pup was only 1.12 lbs but we're going to see the vet again today so hopefully she's gotten bigger!) good luck and I hope she starts feeling better soon! |
oh no poor baby !! I'm sorry its happening again ...the shaking part bothers me but you got some good advise. IF I were you I'd do the tests and have the vet on standby just in case the same thing as last time happens. My vet also offers pepcid AC as help for tummy upsets but ALWAYS check with the vet before giving any medication even over the counter... I hope she starts feeling better bless her heart. |

Get Well Gemma I did want to send along my prayers that Gemma will start eating regularly and feeling better soon. My Vet also prescribed Pepcid when Bella has an upset tummy but only half a tab and I have to crush it up as she won't chew it up. She is a finicky eater as well and I have to constantly change what I offer her. She will not eat rice but she does like chicken but I bake it I don't boil it, I hope that is alright as the vet never said to boil it. She loves baby carrots as well and does prefer them cooked though. She loves peanut butter, toast with a little butter and peanut butter will usually coax her to eat. If that fails then I go to the big guns, eggs with cheese and just a little bacon for the smell. That usually wakes up her taste buds and she gobbles it right up. I know bacon is not good for them but I don't think the little I put in will hurt her. I have watered down chicken broth and mixed it with her kibble as well and she has eaten that as well. I hope Gemma feels better soon. Jay :) |

I think honey or sugar would achieve the same goal. You could even give her some honey right off of your finger, yum! |

I asked on the liver shunt/mvd group that I belong to regarding how they would test liver function on a hypoglycemic, tiny dog, and I was told that many times...vets will opt for post-prandial blood draw 2 hours after eating, without fasting. Maybe you could ask your vet about this...The only thing you would have to worry about regarding the urine bile acid test is that the sample is not tainted, since it is a urine sample. This is what the ladies on the liver shunt/mvd group told me. |
I would say feed her a formula that Lunasmommy made up. I gave that to London when I first got her because she wouldn't eat and I put less and less liquid in it and she began to eat again. I think it is 1/4 half and half, 1/4 karo syrup or maple syrup, 1/4 baby grits, 1/4 baby food that has meat in it like chicken, but make sure there is no garlic or onion powder in it. You mix it all up and feed it to her with a syringe. Also put some pedialyte in her water so that she doesn't dehydrate. I hope she gets better real quick! |
