tail docking I was just reading the poll on here about tail docking and then I started thinking... doesn't it hurt the puppies when it's getting done? How do the vets do it? What is the purpose of a docked tail? |
the tail getting docked is mainly for cosmetic purposes. I'm not 100% sure but I think that the vets do it using a pair of surgical sissors and just cut it off. |
It just seems like it would hurt them. I wonder if they do something to numb that area or something... geez, I sound so ignorant, I've just never had a dog with a docked tail before lol |

I feel bad about the tail docking, we just had a litter of 4, and im taking them in tomorrow to the vet so he can dock the tails . it would break my heart if i did it myself. although i have read on here that it doesn't seem to hurt to bad? |
I've always wondered about the tail docking hurting our babies too. Since it's done before we get them from the breeder, it's something most of us just try not to think about. |
I was wondering too... I asked my breeder if he could sell me a puppy without a docked tail and he said no! :confused: It seems kind of cruel and pointless to me, especially since it is cosmetic unlike spaying and neutering. I didn't want a show dog, I just wanted a companion, but the breeder insisted. -O |
Different vets do it different ways. My vet clamps the tail and twists the end off. It's fast and seems to have minimal pain. Some vets clamp the tail, cut if off, and suture it. . |
The newer method I have been told, the clamp and twist, is very easy to do and the puppies have very little pain and slight to no blood. Several breeders do it while the puppies are nursing and other than a little yelp with the clamp is put on the puppies don't even seem to notice or cry about it. I prefer the docked tail. I have seen how thin and fragile some yorkies tails are so I can see why they are docked. I think it is better to dock them and prevent them from breaking or damaging their tail later because it wasn't docked. JMO. |
