Should I take her to Hawaii??
 

We live in Florida and are going to Hawaii in July, it is a 16 hour flight broke into 3 segments (2 layovers)

We are renting a house there that accepts pets but I'm not sure whether to take Pita or not.

She is calm and quiet in the car and we've been on long trips but never in a plane. What do you think? Is it worth it?

My option is to leave her with my Mother in Law. We left her for 2 days last week with my daughter and she didn't eat. We are going for a week and what if she doesn't eat then???

I would leave her with your mother-in-law. I think it would be less traumatizing then a flight with three layovers. Plus, you'll be able to be free in Hawaii. She'll adjust, and it's only a week.

Check with quaratine. You may not be able to take her in. If I remember correctly there is a 6 month quaratine for dogs going to Hawaii.

you know i think of it this way no one takes better care of her then you do. I would go nuts being away for so long .

I had a friend who moved to Hawaii a year ago and she had to quarantine her dogs for 6 months! You may have to leave her at home!

That is a tough one! I think I would let her spend a little more time at your MIL's before the trip, maybe one night here and there so that she gets used to being there before you go so that when you are gone for a week it won't be so traumatizing! But I agree with kraekerr that the layovers would be horrible and she would end up staying in the hotel room alone which will be a strange place to her, while you guys are out exploring and she may be even more scared.

Important Information about Pets Arriving into Hawaii: The State of Hawaii law states that pets are required to complete a 120-day confinement in the State Animal Quarantine Station. However, if specific pre-arrival and post-arrival requirements are met, animals may qualify for a 30-day quarantine or a new 5-day-or-less quarantine that became effective on June 30, 2003. There is a three page checklist for the 5-day-or-less program on Hawaii's Agricultural web site at http://www.hawaiiag.org/AQS/aqs-checklist-5.pdf. In general, the program requires stringent rabies vaccine requirements, a rabies blood test (which states that the test was given at least 120 days before arrival into Hawaii), a readable microchip, complete documents filled out, payment of about $225 per pet, and a “direct release” from the airplane to the Airport Animal Quarantine Holding Facility located only at the Honolulu International Airport. All pets arriving into Hawaii must be in a sealed carrier or crate and the seal can only be removed by quarantine officials. If you remove the seal yourself, your dog may have to go into a 5 to 120 day quarantine. All requirements must be met exactly according to their documentation, otherwise dogs will go into the lengthy quarantine.

she's only had 1 rabies shot and they require her to have 2 in her lifetime and I don't even want a minute of quarantine, so she's not going. I'll miss her.

Well now at least you don't have to feel guilt for leaving her at home! Its the quarantine's fault! Its nice sometimes when decisions are taken away from us!

Yes, that's true, I am going to let her start spending time with Nana, so she can get used to being there.

To Hawaii or not
 

I found the best solution for me was to get a housesitter who loves my dogs to come stay with them. They loved it and my sister in law got a needed rest from the routine.

Well i guess the quarantine made your decision easier. Start letting her spend time at Nana's house so when your gone is less traumatising. Good luck.

I would suggest that you take your baby to a couple of sleepovers at MIL's so you can be at ease before you leave. It is a hard decision you just had to make but go and enjoy Hawaii. She will not want to join in the hula, pig roasts(well, maybe that one she would like) drinks with umbrellas and so on, You are gonna LOVE the islands..I hope you get to see as many double and triple rainbows as we did. They are awesome!!!!!
