underground fence

does anyone use one of these. my husband wants to get one. but i don't know much about them. will the hurt the yorkies? we have lived here for over 2years . there are fences on the sides but none in the very back of the yard or up near the house. we are renting so we would rather no put a fence up. and i think the people in the back of us are waiting on us even though they have a lab who i know would love to roam free instead of being on a tie out. but my husband wants to put up one of these fences so the babies can go in the back yard to do their business. they have a tie out but tend to get tangled with each other and other things in the yard. so my question is has anyone tried one and what happened, do you like it or no. OR :thumbdown ?
i myself am tired of cleaning thier xpen and walking into a kitchen that smells of pee and poo in the morning!

thanks

I don't know how safe that would be...but I don't have any experiences with any type of fencing, so I don't know...

I can understand why you don't want to put up a fence, but I would be worried about other dogs being able to get to your baby. I've never had experience with an underground fence, but I guess my opinion is, not in favor of them. Yorkies are so small, I'd hate to think of them, or any dog, getting a "shock" while learning where the fence line is.

My Border Collie used to have an 'invisible fence' in a previous yard before I got her. They do get zapped with an electric current...it can be made weaker or stronger. She learned pretty quickly NOT to cross over it because she would get a warning beep within so many feet of the wire...and then a zap once she crossed over. I don't think that would be good for Yorkies. AND, once they cross over...they're free to roam!! Also, the batteries on the collar wear out and have to be checked. AND, it does NOT stop animals from coming into the yard unless they are wearing a shock collar themselves. I think it would be a better idea to get an actual fence.

my brother in law had one for his Golden. Gunner realized if he sat on the inside of the fence and waited for his collar to stop beeping (meaning the batteries were going dead) he could cross over. They gave up on it.

I don't care for them because I don't trust people not to mess with my dog and I don't think they're fool proof. Also, we have strict leash laws in our city and I don't think the invisable fence applies with it.

I have a totally fenced in yard which was great for my Westie, but I'm sure Sadie would be able to go under it at some point - or dig her way out. Aside from that - I'm REALLY afraid of hawks and owls grabbing her and carrying her away. Sooooo - I guess it's pee pads for us!!!

I had the original Invisable Fence for over 4 yrs and I love it. Yes other dogs can come in your yard. I live on a double culdesac and very few other dogs come in my yard (I have good neighbors) Like someone said the "shock" can be made to be stronger or weaker" When I introduce my Yorkies to the fence the training process takes about 3 weeks and they all start out with a buzzer on their collar first, not a shocker.

I never leave my house with my Yorkies outside and am alot of times outside with them.

Yes some people think its cruel using an invisable fence and there have been alot of problems with cheaper brands , but the Original Invisable Fence Co is the only ONE that is recomended by the humane sociaty for animals. Any questions and BTW they are located all over the USA.

The main reason I dislike the underground fencing is because, not only is it painful for the yorkie to get zapped, but think about it. It might keep [I]your[I] yorkies in, but what about keeping other animals out? Think about how scared a little baby would be if a wild animal came into the yard and they were afraid of getting zapped so they couldn't get away? I just would never use it myself..

I don't like them for the reasons mentioned. Plus the trend in training is to emphasize positive reinforcement rather than negative.

Would a portable fence work? I use a double xpen to block off a 15-foot area on my driveway that is otherwise unfenced. Works great. The cost might be prohibitive if it was a large area, though.

this might not be a bad idea... got a picture???

well i wouldn't be leaving them out for long periods of time unless i was out there with them. they'd only be going out to use the restroom unless it was time to play or something. i think i will mention getting another pen to my husband. that would be cheaper too!

Sorry for the delay! This is actually 2 Xpens doubled up, but one would have been all I needed. I keep the two together for the occasions that I bring the pen in the front yard. Shop around. My memory is prices fluctuate.

My daughter used to date a guy whose family had a bigger dog, and he had an invisible fence. One time we were all over there for his birthday/4th of July cookout, and someone asked how much of a shock it gives the dog. So, about 5 of us formed a chain to find out (weird I know lol). I was at the end of the chain, and I could feel the shock, and I feel that it's way too much for a small little dog. JMO
