archie's too hot... it's hot in NY and Archie has been sleeping a lot and hasn't eaten. he was at the beach house yesterday and was running around, and then he was in a car on the way home. he also didn't go to the bathroom at all today, and he threw up yellow bile. do you think it's because of the heat? he's drinking water and peeing OK, though. This is his first experience in this kind of weather... How are your yorkies responding? |
Sounds kind of like he had a really busy day...if he isn't used to the heat I think they'll react by not eating - just make sure he drinks and watch him for any more throwing up - the car could have made him queasy also...poor baby - I hope he feels better ! |
Maximus and I are in NY also..and it was so nice out yesterday I figured I would let Maximus go out and explore for a while...well it must have pooped him out also..because he basically didn't want to get up and move from 2pm on till this morning..lol, and the a/c IS BLASTING in the house....so I attributed it to the heat also...I think it takes them a while to get used to???...he didn't want to eat much yesterday but by 9pm he was hungry and ate his food and drank some more water..this morning he was laying down when I left for work...so I think he is still pooped..lol, I gave some nutrical just to be on the safe side |
I don't know about NY but here in the South I have to keep a good eye on my dogs during the summer so they do not get heat stroke. The fiirst sign of it is heavy panting, rapid heart rate, sign is slowness. I heard they will vomit if it is extreme but my dogs have never gotten that far. If they get too over heated, I will wet them down to cool water(not ice). I make sure their belly and the area around the inner legs are wet(where their blood vessel runs). I heard that major heat stroke can cause lasting damage(respiratory wise) but don't really know too much about it. I hope this info helps |
I have another dog who can't handle excitement in the heat. The only trips she ever gets to go on is to the vet and back. :( But, something to consider is getting a cooling mat. They have them at Petsmart and Petco. You just fill it with cold water for the puppy to lay on. It cools them down physically, and helps them to calm down, and not be so excited. You could even use it in the car. Good luck. |
We have a finished basement which is always nice and cold, and thats where my shepherd loves to lay down he wont even go out when its hot (like today). I will have to make sure to keep an eye macy though because i like to take her with me places. |
We have harwood floors and because the a/c is so high I kept moving him yesterday onto his blankie or bed so he wasn't lying on the floor..but it must have felt good to him....now a quick question seeing as how the a/c is on really cold (landlord controls it)..I have a heavy blanket but Maximus sleeps in his bed (one of those beds you climg in and has fleece lining) at foot of the bed on the floor..he has a blankie is he getting too cold?...I put pj's on him but he refuses to stay under the blankie and always lays on top..if he is cold will he seek warmth or just lay there cold?..my bf said he is probaly too hot and thats why..but I'm not so sure..any advice? |
brownie hates the heat we keep him in the air or hell act the same way keep him wet get him alittle baby pool or play in the hose when outside always have WATER by him make sure its COLD and dont let them run around to much |
It's been pretty warm in southern Illinois the last few weeks and Maggie has just been panting a lot. Although a few weekends ago, she was outside in the heat most of the day with her grandpa (she did have water) and later that night she kept throwing up liquid. She went potty on her pad and got a treat and a few minutes later she threw that up. She's doing better now. Today it's supposed to be in the 90's and the AC is on for her so hopefully she'll be fine! |
Same here in OHIO... Bailey isn't diggin' it at all!! Sleeps alot, and pants just going around the house to pee. I bought him a kiddy pool yesterday,, but as soon as I put him in it, he'd jump out,, hope he might learn to like it! ( like the other post on here, about the dogs that LUV it) Seriously considering the puppy cut,, if this keeps up. |
I was soo worried about Peanut yesterday because the weather in Ohio was HOT HOT HOT, but everytime I brought her in she would run back to the back door and cry until she was let out. |
Texas once again is turing into the hell hole of the world. I even saw the devil leaving town this morning. Maggie has pretty much turned into a couch potato. When she goes out, it's only to use the bathroom, in the shade. Our big dogs are chilling out in the breezeway with a big fan. Our AC is also cranking it out. Maggie is crashed out here beside me with her Winnie The Pooh blankie. Gotta have the blankie. Yesterday I was mowing the lawn, before it got too hot. Maggie was in her exercise pen in the shade. I don't leave her inside, if I'm outside. She has thrown up a couple of times today (clear liquid). I don't know if its from yesterday's heat or not. Keeping my eyes open though. |
Hot dog? I got 3 month old Buffy a few weeks ago and the weather has just turned hot here in NY. I'm assuming it's okay to leave the air conditioning on for her as necessary. Or, is a fan better for little puppies? Any feedback would be appreciated! thank you!! |
Oklahoma is hot! but Bentley doesnt seem to mind! he loves going out side and playing for hours!! but we keep his hair short and when he starts panting we make him drink some water! but he seems to be doing fine so far! |
Good...well, not good that your poor babies are going through this, but I feel comforted knowing that Archie is not sick. He has spent all day just laying around. he drank a lot of water today and we got the air conditioners in. I also gave him a good dose of nutrical just in case and my boyfriend said that Archie ate some hamburger meat while I was out and he went for a walk but only in the shade. I feel very bad for my poor baby, but I also heard that it's not good to put cold water on him when it's hot...that it messes with the body temperature. I figure I'll just let him be for a while. I have hardwood floors, too, so he's kinda sprawled out. Poor baby...it's his first 80 degree day... |
Texas is horrible for heat even with the a/c on - I have linoleum and sabrina moves from spot to spot on the cool floor. My parents have wall to wall carpeting so they put down a couple of cookie sheets and their yorkie moves from one to other of those to cool off or gets on their tile top coffee table! For upset tummy - I break up a peppermint - those red and white ones - and make Sabrina eat about 1/4 of one. She's usually eating again in about 30 minutes. Sometimes they just get their tummy too empty I think. |
I wanted to take Mocha to my softball game yesterday but I decided against it.. I took her to my parents pool and we were only out for 40 mins but she looked really hot.. I keep her in my living room with the fan or AC on during the day and a bottle of cold water in her crate!!I know you aren't susposed to give them water during the day but with the heat, i feel she needs it!! |
Just because of all that hair I make sure my babies are cool. If Autumn doesn't eat she will vomit up yellow fluid, it is stomach bile. She likes to go byebye with me and she will vomit if I don't get her something to eat. It's not like I can tell her "Go get something to eat, we are going to leave." Well, I guess I could but she wouldn't understand me. LOL Sylvia |
I can tell ya how the critters handle the heat in Texas, so maybe it will help you in New York. Texas animals of all kinds, are active in the morning, until about 10, then it's naptime the rest of the day until about 7. You won't hardly see any animals out during the day, when it's hot. Even going down the road, the cattle are all hugging the same mesquite tree. Dogs sweat through their bellies and pads on their feet. They cool themselves through their tongues. Our dogs like to sprawl belly down on the tile, or walk through their splash pool. I will even put a few ice cubes in their water to help with their built in air conditioner. If you can keep your activities with your babies to in the morning or late afternoon, you will see how much better they feel. Hope this hot, windy advice will help. :shade: |
