First 24 hours with new Puppy... is her behaviour normal? Hi Guys, I've just brought my new Yorkie Baby home and I'm a little worried... So far she has not gone potty... and she's been with me for 7 hours... and nothing. I've tried taking her out and waiting but she just sniffs around for a while and then chews and explores. When I bring her back in she just curls up and goes to sleep... Shes had some food and some water... Any ideas? New time mummy here and I'm very nervous! So thanks to anyone who can help put my mind at ease!!!:( |
Hi and congrats on your baby! I am pretty much a new mom myself. I was nervous too! I know that when I brought my Lily home, it seemed as if she didn't go potty either. We took her out so many times but nothing. I later realized that she was peeing but it was quick! She was so tiny I could barely tell she was going. I would suggest just watching her more closely. She may have went but was so fast, you didn't even know! Goodluck and enjoy your baby!! |
Hi and welcome to yorkie talk... my baby did the same thing when we first got him!! We didnt notice he was actually peeing when he was!! There bladders are so small, it doesnt hold that much!!! You baby will be fine :) |
Make sure you have some kind of sugary substance to give your new pup, i.e. nutrical, honey, syrup, etc. Yorkie pups get hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) very easily. The first sign is lethargy. Make sure your new pup is getting enough sugar and water. Good luck! |
I thought my puppy was in renal failure! I then realized that he barely squated to pee(he wasalmost standing up) and there was less than a tablespoon of pee every time!. Needless to say, he had been urinating just fine...I didn't see the signals or the tiny messes. |

Here is a website link that a breeder publishes online, just for new Yorkie puppy owners: http://yorkiecare.homestead.com/rules.html I think you'll find it helpful. You can ignore the food recommendation as far as dog food, and follow your breeder's recommendation. However, the feeding routine is pretty sensible and is designed to prevent hypoglycemia in the puppy. Also the recommendation for rest-time and what you can expect the first few days I found very helpful. |
Wow thanks so much!! Panic over, she made a lovely big puddle at 2:30am  That link is excellent Sweetums!! |
Yay! The puppy pottied! Now remember how glad you were to see that puddle, when you find puddles where they shouldn't be! ;) |
Ah yes... I know... But after reading all the advice on here I think if she makes a puddle its partly my fault so... I'll just have to get on with it!;) The great thing is she chose her own name... we couldn't decide between Penny or Lilly and she responds when I call her Lilly but call her Penny and N O TH I N G!! I guess they do know their own minds! |
