Never Bathing her myself agaiN! Yesterday my little Bailey girl went to the dog park and had a blast, but some bassett hound slobberd ALL OVER her back! So when it came time for bed Bailey needed a bath. I have never bathed her before (she usually goes to the groomer) The getting wet part wasnt so bad, but when it came time to dry her off (with a blowdryer) It terrified her! I felt horrible! She curled up in a little ball in my lap and burried her head and wouldnt stop shaking!!!! I guess the noise must have scared her (the blowdryer wasnt on hott and it was far away from her so i know i wasnt burning her) she was terrified and I absolutely HATED doing that to her... Im NOT going to bathe her again unless she absolutely cant get into a groomer. It was so traumatizing for her and it broke my heart! Has anyone else had this problem with their baby??? |
Wobie doesn't like baths or blow-drying either. He shakes and whimpers, but I know I'm not hurting him so I do it anyway, very gently. He's not upset afterwards, so I don't think its a big deal... |
My Lily isn't one for baths either. I started a thread asking for some advice on giving a puppy his or her baths. Many people told me to put a towel in the dryer to warm it up..so when she is all bathed, wrap her in the warm towel. I towel dry her and then blowdry, but i keep the blow dryer on for a minute before so she doesn't freak out at the sound. If you bathe her again, I would definitely try the warm towel thing. It worked for me:) |
Ive started using blow dryer on myself in the living room so he gets used to the sound. He can run if he wants, or stay and check it out. Right now he does a lil of both but was really curious when he seen Bella all sprawled out loing it! He was like HUH???? WHy is she not trippin out right now????? lol |
Different blow dryers have different pitches. Surfie will shake if I use a dryer that squeals, I bought a new one and now he lays there as calm as can be. Don't know if that is the problem in your case, some pups just don't like baths. |
Dont give up, associate bath/blowing time with something she really likes. My dogs love to get groomed and brushed because they know they will get to go for a walk to show off how pretty they are. Also, they get use to the soundof the dryer, mine did anyway. |
I bathe and groom all of mine myself. However I never blowdry. I towel dry and hold them wrapped up like a baby and usually put a Tee on them if there is a chance of a chill. Don't worry, it'll get better :) |
I put a towel in the microwave for a minute, one for the second I finish rinsing her and another one to use when that one cools off. (she's very cold natured) After all the "spa" towels she doesn't need much drying with the hair dryer and tolerates it. |
Sassy always hangs out with me when I'm getting ready in the morning. I use the hair dryer on myself every day, so she's getting used to it. :) When I bathed her for the first time last week, she didn't have any problems with it. I wrapped her in a towel and used the dryer on her while she was still in the towel before I moved to drying her fur directly. |
Conner doesn't mind his bath, but he hates the blow dryer. I just towel dry him, then he runs around the house and finishes the drying process. |
At first Teddy and London were both scared of taking a bath and def. the blowdryer but they have gotten used to it and actually run around when i dry them. I guess the more you do it the better. |
Don't give up. Work on getting her used to the blow dryer. If she was that scared with you, just think what it must be like at the groomers...there are lots of good suggestions in this thread for acclimating her! Poor baby. Poor mommy. I don't know who I feel worse for! |
I don't blow dry Buddah. He is ok in the bath. He doesn't like it but he doesn't freak out. The blowdry is another story. I just wrap him in a towl get all the water out of his hair I can then I let him run wild. He acts so crazy! After he calms down I spray him with some leave in conditioner and brush him. Seems to work better than the blow dry. Buddahs hair isnt too long yet so I'm not sure how great it will work when he has a full coat. |
I have only bathed my lil one twice in the kitchen sink as my vet says she is still too young to go to the groomer...she is a bit hesitant, but I have purchased a small pool so that during the summer I'm hoping she will get used to being in the water so that bathing isn't so tramatic for her....I also have a blow dryer in my downstairs bathroom which I turn on to cool everynight and blow dry her for about a minute or two just to get her used to it....she is getting much better with the blow dryer now...I really don't want to use a groomer if I don't have to..... too many bad experiences with different groomers nipping/cutting my Sweet Sheltie "Fussie" when she was alive (She is now in Dog Heaven) she would come back with cuts on her tummy...broke my heart  |
I am sorry to hear that she was so scared!!! Buddy was too the first time I ever used the blow dryer on him but now he loves it. He actually seems to enjoy the warm air blowing on him. When I do his face I turn the dryer on low. Hopefully, Bailey will get use to it and not be scared. |
i gave roman a bath for the first time last week and it made me feel so bad! he was shaking the whole time and continued to do so for 20 minutes afterwards. he didnt like the blow dyer either so i wrapped him in a towel and he fell asleep... i know its not hurting him but i still feel bad :( so i dunno what im going to do. roman is 11 weeks can u take then to the groomer this young? |
Tetley's pretty good about the hairdryer. I think it really helps if they're used to seeing you use it on yourself. When I do my hair and makeup in the morning he snuggles down next to my feet and doesn't even flinch when I turn on the dryer, so when I use it on him it's no big deal. Now brushing, on the other hand, is another story... Can't get him used to a brush or comb, he still feels he has to attack it. |
Mine have never been groomed by anyone but me. I don't use a blow dryer on them as it tends to dry the skin and coat. I know they are not afraid of it because if I have my head down low, blowing my hair, they check it out and I blow them a little. They love it! |

I don't blow dry either. Joey just gets a good towel-dry and then he air-dries in the house. |
Tia can't stand the sound of the blowdryer, or bathorrom fans or the vacuum. I think it's the sound of the motor that bothers her. In the winter I turn on the gas fire place while I'm bathing her so that when I'm done, I wrap her in a towel and lay a second one in front of the fireplace. It gets toasty and warm while she rubs herself dry! In the summer, we just air dry...the same way but without the fireplace. |
Jake hated his bath at first, but now he seems to enjoy it. I got him used to the blow dryer by first using it on myself so he would get used to the sound. Now he lays very still on his grooming table and lets me dry him and brush him, and he acts like it feels good. I massage him all over, he loves that! Then, he gets a treat! Have you asked the groomer how she acts when she baths and dries her? |
I've never owned a blow dryer -- I've always wrapped my sweeties up in a warm towel, then their fleece blanket and cuddle them until they dry. Always works since I've only had puppy cuts on Brutus, and now Maxwell. |
