Curiosity Question recently i've been around alot of people that have big dogs and small dogs and i was just wondering if it was better to introduce a small dog as a puppy to a big dog or introduce a big dog as a puppy to the small dog? i'm not planning on getting a big dog or small dog for that matter i was just curious as to what others thought especially ones that have been in that situation. i would think it would be better to introduce the big dog as a puppy to other dogs but like i said i've never been there before. i know this is kind of a dumb question so if you don't feel like responding i understand, lol. i was just a little curious. |
I have not had to make that move before but I did recently place one of my adult moms whom I retired. I had given my granddaughter a rescue Yorkie almost 10 years ago and she died suddenly. Last year I had bought a Sheltie for the family. So new big puppy with old little Yorkie. NO PROBS with aggression. I gave Whisper(Yorkie) to them before Christmas and she weighed under 5 lbs. Sheltie now weighs over 20 pounds..this time big teenager dog and 2 year old adult female Yorkie. Still NO PROBS with aggression. It did take the dogs about 2 months to really play..Whisper was a quiet female during her time in my home with as many as 11 other Yorkies of differing ages. This might not be of any benefit to you, but bottom line.it depends on how you handle them and the personalities of the dogs.. All of these dogs are females and they do have a tendency to be more assertive than owners realize.. |
I have been both routes. Years ago we introduced our Chow puppy to our Cocker. The chow thought the cocker was his mama. Wasn't too long before the chow was a BIG BOY. By that time the cocker didn't care. Now we have Maggie. Our other dogs are Heelers (Australian Cattle Dogs). Our female heeler hates everybody and everything except us. The day we brought Maggie home, we were very nervous. Now our mouths fall open daily. Our female heeler, thinks that Maggie is her pup. Pepper has never in her life had a litter or even a heat cycle. She will even bring Maggie toys to play with. I'm still shocked. Miracles never cease. |
My only experience was probably 30 years ago ... I had a small Peke-a-poo and Brandy was the bossiest little thing!! I bought my son an AKC Collie puppy for Christmas and she was adorable and smaller, at that time, than Brandy. Brandy would smack Duchess [Collie] around and just acted like a "bully"!! In case you all don't know, Collie's grow pretty fast and it wasn't any time at all before Duchess turned the tables on little Brandy and showed her who was alpha!! :) They got along really well but those first few months were very interesting!! ;) |
This is a sad story..My sister told me a girl she knows had a yorkie about 4 or 5 month old. It was playing with her mom sheltie and the sheltie tore the throat out of the yorkie..don't know how old the sheltie was and before the dogs had always played good together. So, it just goes to show ...you never know. |
