another hypoglycemia ?? I did a search and nothing came up? Wierd... Anyway, can someone tell me what the signs are if a dog is hypoglycemic?? I thought vomiting was a sign?? I thought I knew what to look for....but my breeder says vomiting is NOT a sign....now I need assistance please! |
This site has great information on it and is a cute cute site- it was the first yorkie website I read and it kept me reading for days...Rest in Peace Shooter. http://www.shooterdog.com/alexfaq3.htm |
Paddy became hypoglycemic once when he was a really little baby. He did throw up but b/c he also didn't eat much that day I think the vomiting was a trigger to the hypoglycemia rather than a symptom. His symptoms were EXTREME lethargy, (as in closing his eyes and he couldn't even hold up his head) Shivering, whimpering and not even being interested in nutrical (which he loves). I'd say if you are at all worried start off by giving nutrical or karo syrup on the way to the vet. We had to pry open Paddys mouth and put some on his toungue. Its good we did that b/c he already started to come around my the time we got to the hospital. (we had to go to emergency b/c it happened at 11pm) Also check his gums...if they are grayish or black that could be a sign as well. I hope your baby is alright!! |
Taken off this site http://petcare.suite101.com/article....dogs_and_cats- and a good reason ALL people with new puppies should have Nutracal on hand - Trina - is everything ok ????? Symptoms of hypoglycemia: Symptoms include but are not limited to: Slow heartbeat and breathing, weak, sleepy, disoriented, wobbly, glassy eyed, and seizures. In some cases pets may lose consciousness and fall into a coma. Pets can die from hypoglycemia if they do not receive treatment. Treatment for hypoglycemia: If you notice your pet is acting wobbly or weak try giving some treats or canned food, anything you know your pet will eat. If your pet won't eat, try giving it some sugar, Karo syrup works the best. Rub the syrup on the gums and under the tongue if your pet is unconscious. If your pet is not unconscious and can swallow you can give the sugar with a needleless syringe. If your pets blood sugar drops it may also begin to suffer with hypothermia, so you'll need to help keep your cat or dog warm with a hot water bottle and blankets. A milk jug filled with steaming hot water makes a good hot water bottle in a pinch. |
You can't search for hypoglycemia using the search tool because the word is too long. To search for it on YT, go to google and enter this: hypoglycemia site:www.yorkietalk.com |

Baby Gemma is in the hospital! I'm just drained. I have a couple threads going about her, but basically she started vomiting yesterday and by this morning it was every hour. By the time I got her to the dr they said she could have died if I'd waited any longer because her glucous had dropped to 32 - where 200-350 is normal! Here is one of the threads....I think....I should have read this to see if its the right one-my brain is fried. Please prayer for her.... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80953 Trina |

I don't know what it is yet. The vets keep saying that vomiting is not a symptom of giardia, but everyone here says it is. And we ARE smarter than a lot of these vets, based on our own experience! I firmly believe that. So....of course she was hypoglycemic by the time I got her there, but what caused the vomiting, we dont know yet  The breeder ridiculed me for admitting her in the hospital, saying I did the wrong thing. So now I'm second guessing myself. But as Patti said to me, if I had listened to her, my baby would be dead right now :( |

dont blame yourself. You were the one who did the right thing. I'm so glad you did what you thought was best and that breeder could have killed her by telling you that.... had you listened :( :( :( :( 24 hours without food ??? NEVER ! |
I hope Baby Gamma is ok! I'll keep her in my YT prayers! |
Poor Gemma! And poor mommy LoveMyGirlz! :( I'm sure everything will be alright. We all know you'd do anything to keep your babies, safe and healthy. You and your little furbaby will be in my prayers. |
Hey Trina - did you pick her up last night or did she spend the night and more importantly - HOW IS SHE DOING ???? |
Hope your baby is okay! I battle with hypo everyday with my guy. He goes from bouncing happy heathy the goes to sleep like normal and has seizures during the night. So I dont get to see if he ever has symptoms to tell you what they look like or are. I know every dog is different. He never gets lethargic, wobbly, nothing of the sort because he's sleeping. All I can say is keep them warm. My vet said that getting cold at night causes thier bodies to work to try and keep themselves warm....therefore burning sugar...then causing hypo episode. If they are warm body doesnt burn off that sugar! Lots of mini meals and MAKE SURE they go to bed with full belly! I let him lick a lil peanut butter before bed now....and try to get a snack of complex sugars and grains in his system. Couple cheerios, baby carrots anything.... Good luck with your baby! If you ever need to talk Im here! Hypo is so scary to me. There are soooo many times I wanna just cry and talk to someone who goes thru the same thing.....Especially when these occur at night, vet is closed, and family asleep....feel very alone. |

Well after reading my post it kinda sounds like he is worse than he is....sorry sometimes you dont realize how things come out. In the month I have had him....he has had 2 episodes/seizures. First one I had NO IDEA what was going on. Did Bile acid, blood work, 2 fecal exams....ended up hypo. I sleep with him on a matress on my floor. I keep house VERY warm, feed frequently, do snacks, nutrical, the whole 9 yards. I think I am just wore out. :coffee_n_ It took seeing him have 1 seizure and now I am paranoid. I sit at night when I should be sleeping, and he IS sleeping and just stare at him. I wake up every hour or so and cover him up check his gums....you know typical "paranoid mom" syndrome. WHen I am laying there exhausted wanting to sleep but cant is when I feel alone..,.I start the WHAT IF'S?? I'll be fine and he is doing great and has gained well over a pound since I have had him....Just gets scary and anyone with a baby with any issue I am sure can relate. So whenever I see someone post about hypo baby or sick baby...I try and let them hear my story so they too know they are not alone! Thanks all for helping us mommies with sick babies. YT is great! |
I'm so sorry about Gemma, you and her have been thru alot. I hope she is okay??? |
Hows Gemma??? |
Wow, this is an interesting thread. Is this more common to very young dogs and very small dogs, or can any little Yorkie of any age have this? On two separate occasions, our little girl (5 years and 7 lbs.) seemed to loose control of her muscles and list to one side and act strangely. She also did spit up a small amount on the first occasion. She also seemed to be trembling. The first time, we took her to the emergency vet, but by the time we got there, she was fine. They thought that she may have had a seizure. She had another episode recently, (it has been about a year since the first) but we just picked her up and watched her, and she was fine. Could this have been hypoglycemia? She is a very picky eater and sometimes refuses food. |

It is more common to puppies of small breeds, and extra tiny adult dogs, but I believe it can happen to just about any dog. |

As for not sleeping, I was like that with Gemma and also after each girl has been spayed! I just watch over them like you do....thanks for sharing your story ;) |
