How long does the whining/yelping last? Our 11 w/o Yorkie is just learning about being alone, and we've been leaving for a half-hour to an hour to get her used to the idea. If she's in her crate, she calms down in 10 minutes. When she's just in her ex-pen, it never ends. We can't even leave the room without a big production, but we try to go about our daily routine as though we don't hear her. We've been ignoring her whines the best we can (never rewarding her, giving in or scolding her - just a little ch-ch to discourage it), with the hope that she'll figure out that whining doesn't pay. How long until they get the picture? I'm confident we can outlast her, but I'm curious what we're up against. |
Sukoshi never barks or yelps...but whining...oh...whining she DOES! It sounds like you're doing the right thing though. Sukoshi whines when she wants attention, up on the bed, etc.; however, we did like you and we don't acknowledge or reward the whining, and she HAS learned that I won't get her out of her bedroom after work until she's quiet. So now, I come in the door and completely ignore her (her "bedroom" is right inside the front door, and she's always sitting at the baby gate when I get home), and then after a couple minutes, I walk over and get her out. If she whines...I make her wait longer. It took awhile, but she HAS learned not to whine when it comes to that. Now, how to get them to stop whining at other times (when wanting up on the bed, etc.)...that I can't help you with! Good luck! |
romeo has never whined at all. not even on the first night we got him home and we were all expecting that because he was just a 6 week old baby! not one peep. he doesn't bark alot but has started to when playing with my son. |
As long as you do not pay attention to her when she cries, she should stop on her own fairly soon. If she cries at night, try to crate her in your bedroom where she can see you. Just remember, the first 3 months or so these little ones go through a fear of abandonment. They were just taken from their litter mates, from their pack, and have not yet learned that they are part of a new pack. Imagine how you would feel when you were 5 years old and someone took you from your family and brought you to live with a new one? During this time, your baby is learning that when you leave, you will come back. Just give it time and don't acknowledge the behavior. Also remember this, a good puppy is a tired puppy. Wear baby out playing before baby goes into the ex-pen or crate. Then baby will sleep. It has been a while, but I think Gracie cried until she was about 12 weeks old. I got her at 8 weeks, so I guess that is about a month after she came home with me. I remember I was about to pull my hair out with the crying when she finally stopped. I did get her the Comfort Pup dog bed, that has a heart beat in it. That really helped. Give her lots of love too! Good luck! |
Every furbaby is different, but I will give you my experience. AprilLove didn't whine but she was much much worse, she sounded like some wild amazon bird out of the wild jungle!!! Her squawking sounds were enough to make me wonder "what have I done"!!!!????. lol. I put her in the crate for 5 minutes at a time at first and had to plug my ears!! I always put a little treat in there first. But I will say, it didn't last much more than a month or two and when you think about it, the first few weeks are the hardest on these little ones. They are in a strange new place, away from their mommy, everything is new and different we take them away from everything they knew their whole lives. They are pack animals and want to belong. They just want to be near us. They want to know that you will always be there. It takes a while for that sense of security to soak in. So, patience and before you know it, she will come around. Just remember to give lots of love and attention and play time when she is not in the crate. You will soon be rewarded ten-fold with love and adoration and Yorkie silliness!!!! It is WORTH IT!! |
Bella cries for probably less than 10 minutes every night when I put her in her kennel. It's a short enough time that I just ignore it. Tonight I began really kennel training her to work on potty training. If she's not with me, she's out to potty or in her kennel. She's cried some but I keep telling her quiet. And when I'm ready to take her out, I'll only take her out when she's quiet. Praise and treats when they're good. Tell them sternly quiet when they're not. My trainer tells me to firmly slap the top of her kennel when she cries but I don't find that necessary. |
