House/crate training question The background: Our yorkie is 11 weeks old, and we've had her for four days. She's had only two accidents so far and is taking to the crate well. Since we both work, I brought her with me in the morning then took her home at lunch today for the afternoon (her longest time alone yet - before that, an hour alone was her record). She ate, drank and went potty before i crated her, but I have a feeling she'll whine and yelp for little while until she falls asleep. Is it ok to leave her without water for four hours while crated? I want to avoid any accidents in the crate, but not if it means she's in stress because she's thirsty. |
Sukoshi has her own "bedroom" for duing the day at work (our 3/4 bathroom that we don't use and converted into her room, complete with a couch and plenty of toys), so she has access to water and her potty pad all day while we're at work (we didn't think she could hold it all day), and we use a baby gate to keep her in (but that way she doesn't feel completely closed off from the rest of the house since she can still see out)...BUT...if you aren't able to do something like that for your baby during the day, I know we don't have water in Sukoshi's crate where she sleeps at night, and she's never had a problem. I'd presume your little one will just sleep all day while you're gone, just like Sukoshi does during the night, and as long as she's sleeping, I don't know why it would hurt her to be without water as long as you make it available to her as soon as you get home and all evening, but if she's awake playing, then that may be a different story. I do the same thing Sukoshi's mom does. I bought a gate at Walmart for $9.99 or something like that and I use it to keep her in a room while we are out. I'd leave water and some kibble (I don't anymore since she's already 6 1/2 months). She has her potty pad and her little crate in case she wants to lounge in there. She has a few toys as well. I made a room for Gracie behind my sofa. It is an ex-pen with her crate and bed inside. There are pee pads, toys and water. When she was tiny, I left dry food out for her as well. This method worked really great for us. I suppose you should stick to the crate if you are trying to potty train her outside. I think I read or was told that a puppy can hold it's bladder in hours the number of months old it is up to 6 months. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Personally, I would leave both food and water available for her. 11 weeks is still pretty young. |
you could try an ex pen :) she could go on the pad AND you can teach her to go out. and when shes old enough to have the run of the house and hold it, just eliminate the pad |
