Scared me to death last night... Last night, I went out with my parents to light some fire works. So my dad was holding on to Yogurt ( My yorkie ). Then after the fireworks were all gone, my dad put him on a bench thingy beside the park. THENNNNNNNNN HE WAS SNIFFING AND SITTING, THEN HE jumped off the bench and went on the grass, sniffing stuff. I was pretty panicky cause, it was reallly dark, and it was in the middle of a biiggggggggg park. Yogurt is 8 month old and we only took him out without a leash when he was little, which is like 2 month old. So now that hes 8month old, we've never taken his leash off. Just wondering, do you think it's okay to take her leash off in the park, like, will he run away. IMO i don't think he will : \ but, we don't wanna take the chance. :D :p |
Glad your little one didn't get lost or anything. No, I would not let my babies off leash unless it's in a small enclosed area and even then I'd watch them like a hawk:) |
Oops, forgot to welcome you to YT! Would love to see pics of Yogurt:) |
Some dogs, no matter how old, will still run away or wonder around freely if they get the chance while some doesn't. Buttercup used to do that but that was before he started his training sessions with a private trainer. I was told that if they know the stay command then it helps a lot. You can use an area in your house to train him/her. FOr instance, close your restroom door and tell him to sit and stay and open the door. That's what the trainer did with Buttercup and with consistency, it worked. |
NEVER let your dog off the leash when he is in an unfenced area! There are uncountable things that could happen to him, running away is only one of them! Babies change as they get older too so his behavior now won't match his behavior a month ago or in a few months in the future. Please heed my warning. I do want to welcome you to YT and congratulate you on getting your new baby. Please know that you will always have the comfort of knowing that we care about the two of you and will help you in any way we can. You are in for a wonderful experience as you raise him. Once again welcome, we will be looking forward to seeing some pictures! |
welcome,,,glad you joined us... and""""""""""""""""""""" never, never, never, ever, take them out without a leash.. please, thats just asking for trouble... better safe than sorry |
welcome What a great name . . . Yogurt! I love it. Don't forget terriers like a chase - you never know . . . the leash keeps you in control and your sweetie safe. |
Welcome!!! This is a great site for asking questions,im sure you will love it here!<IMO> you dont ever want to take your baby out without a leash,as smart as they are ,yorkies love to explore! That could mean running off where you may not be able to catch them[very fast little guys]!So Please Dont!:yorkietal |
I never would. Who knows, someone could come up and snatch your Yorkie away (these days it seems all too common), an animal could get him, your Yorkie could run into the street and get run over. Dogs are dogs and no matter how trained they may be, you can never be 100% sure that he will respond when called, in all situations. At the very least, I'd put a retractable leash on him. |
I would have to agree w/everyone else. Keep Yorgurt on a leash unless you are in a fenced in area. You would much rather be safe then sorry. If something happened because he was not leashed you would blame yourself. Welcome to YT. You have joined a great site! |
Welcome to YT! You have been given some great advice. The only thing I would add is that the leash should be attached to a harnes s not a collar to protect his trachea. We would love to see pictures of Yogurt (hint, hint). |
My little one lost his being off leash privilege when he was about 11 weeks and he ran off when he saw some people up the parking lot where I live. It scared me too much to let him off again. He loves people and other animals and I know he would run to see them. |
