Need advice-he's sleeping in odd places I've been watching Otis for a week now for liver symptoms. I posted earlier this week on that and got some great info. He has an appt this friday for the bile acid test. In the last couple of days I've found him sleeping in places he's never slept in before... Between the toilet and the bathtub, and in the back of the closet, also, he hasn't spent much time in the family room with me and Oliver, he goes back to the bedroom. Has anyone had experience with this? My neighbor told me to leave him alone and quit staring at him. She thinks I'm being paranoid because I lost a dog a few years ago to liver shunt. I had a terrible vet that misdiagnosed him. If I'd had this forum back then, I might have been able to save him. I'm definately having the blood test and I bought some Science diet supposedly "low protein" food to mix in with his pedigree food. I'd appreciate some input. Thanks guys. |
Also, he's 3 yrs old. Wouldn't liver problems have shown up when he was younger? Is there any non-prescription low protein food I can purchase other than science diet? |
is this the ONLY reason you are thinking liver problems? |
No, there have been a couple times he's seemed to be "spacing out" on me. He was kind of looking up at nothing. I called his name and he was fine. I cut his bangs because I thought maybe his hair was in his eyes. He's had an episode of hyper-salivation, but it didn;t last long and hasn't happened again. I'll be glad to get the blood test and hopefully know for sure. |
Well, best of luck to you. I wish I knew more about it, I know Ginger will hide when her belly doesnt feel good. Keep us posted. |
Thanks, I've learned so much about it on here. Like supplements and healthy treats. Hopefully I'm just being paranoid, but something just seems "off" with him. He just came out and sat beside me for a few minutes, then went back to the bedroom. Thanks again. |
I have a large walk in closet with a small doggie bed and Lacey's favorite blanket. She'll go in there just to have some quiet from Chloe, my other yorkie and to sleep during the day. Chloe wouldn't go near her bed. Both dogs sleep with me at night; however, I've found my instincts are good. I did not see your earlier post but look at the gums. If pale, Nutracal is the ticket. I just had an experience last week with Lacey and within hours she was in the vet hospital on antibiotics and fluids. I cried a river having to leave her but thankfully she is much better. Small dogs can easily get into something and get sick. Good luck |

Thanks for the names of foods. I think your right about him needing a break... His over protective mommy and hyper little brother just may be driving him crazy!! Thanks for your help on this. |

For hypoglycemia, if you don't have nutri-cal, honey or karo syrup will work. |
Hi Paula - I'm not going to tell you you're being paranoid, because most of us are this way. I hope it isn't what you're thinking. Kacee has always been one to be found sleeping in odd places. Not so much anymore, but when she was a puppy. If someone left a closet open for a few minutes then she would go in there and go to sleep. When they closed the closet door, they didn't know she was in there. I'd miss her and go on a hunt through the whole house trying to find her. Just yesterday I missed her and after looking through the whole house I found her sound asleep in a guest bedroom.;) |
I just wanted to reply, I know your worried about your baby, we are all a little overprotective when it comes to them. They are a mixture of a big tough man and a delicate ceramic ballerina. I don't know about you guys but my Dax is perfect one minute and he can be very ill in almost no time. I just wanted to say sometimes I wish for just a moment to myself...Dax is the polar opposite of insecure (he thinks he's bigger than me sometimes), but, love his little heart, he won't let me out of his sight. If he is asleep in the room where I am and I get up, no matter how I try not to disturb him, he is right under me and usually into the other room before me lol. Right now I am sitting at my desk so I am surrounded by about a dozen toys and his blanket lol. Do you have other pets? Maybe your baby just needs some quiet time alone? It's just me and Dax and I travel for work so when I'm on contract I don't have hardly any visitors and am lucky if I get to know my neighbors well enough to speak to them outside so of course he is very attached to me. Thankfully he does adapt well and shows no signs of seperation anxiety when I am at work or have to leave him with someone else. Good luck and I hope you find answers to your dillema. |

Starting with a general geriatric blood panel could be a start. I would be careful about a bile acid test as other reasons than shunt can elevate BA test results. You might also have things like knees checked, for slipping patellas that could give pain. A good vet can 'feel' for things also such as enlarged liver or spleen, that sort of thing. If there is no vomiting or diahrrea and eating/drinking normally then I doubt it is a digestive disorder. Sometimes with unknown cause for strange behaviour could be a process of elimination where start with a blood panel if that all shows normal it could be something else. Even parasites will cause strange behaviour even to having a bit of a seizure. You could ask your vet about a good wormer and/or have a stool sample checked but I do caution about stool sample checks as often parasite issues can be missed. Parasites usually will cause diahrrea but not always. |
I don't have any advice, just support. Don't worry too much, even though its your job as a mommy...I'm sure everything will be fine. I send little Otis my love... |
