I have gulpers too. If I give them one kibble they chew it, but if it's in a bowl they inhale it. I have no solution... sorry |
Betty used to do that sometimes. At her next meal, I fed her one kibble at a time by hand. That slows down the pace. Also, if I give her something besides a kibble, I hold it tight between my fingers and let her 'pick' at it. That way she bites off little pieces and chews them. It makes it last longer and lets her actually taste and enjoy it, rather than inhale it. She might 'nip' me by mistake once in awhile, but it's worth it! LOL! |
If you're buying the 'small bites', they can be too small. My babies inhaled them, then the food got wet in their tummys and began to swell causing them to throw them up whole...:eek: So we switched to the next size up and now they are forced to chew them before swallowing. They had no problems switching and did not try to swallow them whole. And best of all.... no more throwing up or inhaling! :D About the treats... Sammie is the same way. She wouldn't even take treats from the trainer. We found some All Natural beef treats, but I don't know the exact name. When I get home, I'll PM you with that info. It's the only treat she'll take.... |

My 7 month old, Button, does exactly the same. The only way I've found is the same, to feed him one bit at a time by hand. It takes ages as he's just learned to "sit" for treats & he's so proud of it he does it without being asked for each piece! :) |
I read somewhere to put a couple of golf balls in their dish with their food--they have to root around them, forcing them to slow down. Didn't work with Basil--he picked up the golf balls, played with them a while and then gulped his food again. |
My babies did the say thing. I just started feeding them a slightly bigger kibble and now they have no choice but to chew:D |
Someone once told me to put a small rock (one they can't get in their mouth) in the bowl. Then they would have to eat around it and it would slow them down. The food that I had trouble with one of mine doing that was the Solid Gold Wee Bites. Neither dog seems to do that with the Canidae that they are eating now. Telea, Zoe' and Mia :doghop: |
I saw this dog bowl on gwlittle the other day that is made for this purpose, not sure how functional it is though http://www.gwlittle.com/prod/Bowls-a...owls_1355.aspx and the price isn't too bad. I kinda like the water bowl, it'd be nice not to have wet face every time Zoe drinks her water. |
Autumn was a gulper. I started putting Missing Link on her food and she started to actually chew it. Maybe that would help!:aimeeyork |
Joey doesn't chew his food either but there are things you can do to slow their eating down while serving the dual purpose of mental stimulation. Scattering their food works well. You can make it easy by scattering it on the kitchen floor. Or, scattering it in your yard creates more of challange. Another idea is using a food-dispensing toy like the Molecube that they have to roll around to get the food. |
