Calling all who have more than one dog...help Ok. Question for anyone who can help me here... I have a 1 1/2 year old and a 13 week old (Yorkies of course). ;) The problem? They get into eachother's food! Baxter eats adult and Chloe eats puppy, so I'd like to keep them from eachother's food. I haven't found anything that works-other than putting up the gate during feeding time to seperate them. Sometimes Chloe will eat hers and move on to Baxters. Other times, she doesn't touch her's and eats his. :cool: Does anyone have a solution to this? |
I have the same problem except the one eating my yorkies puppy food is a 3 yr old 105 lb shepherd. lol He has suddenly developed a taste for puppy food again :p |
What i do with mine now since i had to change Chelsey's diet is, i put her in the babypen while shes eating, shes a very slow eater she picks them out one by one and runs to the other side of the pen to eat it, this way i dont have to play " cop " while they eating. |
I had the same question when I got Archie last fall. Since my boy free feed, that was even a bigger problem. The only thing I was able to do was mix the regular and puppy. When Archie was really small it wasn't too much of a choice for him, the puppy was smaller so he would take that over the larger kibble. But Andy and Barney ate the puppy too :eek: It hasn't really hurt them and soon I will be switching to all adult soon. Other than seperating them there really isn't too much you could do... |
Feeding more than one yorkie I imagine we all have this problem, especially if one is young with food out 24/7 and the other an adult. I just mix the puppy food with Eukanaba lamb and rice and if my Chloe, the year old one, gets too greedy I hand feed Lacey. She will actually pick out her food and leave the rest. I did have a vet tell me once the dog is spayed/neutered you could go ahead and move to adult food. I didn't take that advice. I also keep an eye out for their weight, if one starts to get pudgy and the other too lean, I stay right with them through feeding time to ensure each gets the proper amount. Lacey also will decide to pick up one nugget at a time and take it across the room to eat it. Chloe, on the other hand, throws hers around before eating it. I guess I don't have any easy answers, but it seems to work out fine somehow. I think the issue for me is less who is more hungry than the size of the food. Tiny mouths just have a harder time chopping bigger food. |
My sister in law recently had the same problem with her 2yr old yorkie and her 12wk old puppy she ended up feeding them both Royal Canin puppy, she said her vet told her puppy food is OK for adults so they will both eat that till she is old enough to switch to adult, then she will put them both on adult Royal Canin. So far they've both been eating the food and doing really well. Good luck! ;) |
Mine are both over a year, but recently my little girl had pups, so I switched her to puppy food. They began fighting about one month before she had the babies, so we had to purchase an additional cage. Now with the pups, I keep her food and water in her cage with the puppies, and his food and water in his cage. I put one in and open the other cage, then I put the other in the cage and open the other. If you are not going to have one of them fixed, you might as well come up with some way to seperate them now :D |
feeding It will not hurt an adult to eat puppy food until your puppy is grown..infact all my adults eat puppy food until they are spay/neutered at 5 to 6 yrs. Never had kidney or any health problems result from it. Of course it can be a problem with an overweight Yorkie. |
I put Carl and his food in his crate. It's gone in 2 minutes. I have to do this because my Rottweiler is Alpha around the house and thinks that she can have his food too. He, of course, knows not to even approach her dish. :rolleyes: |
My shepherd did the same thing. Gained 10 lbs. on puppy food. Then someone turned me on to Canidae which is for puppies, too. It's really good stuff and I have them all on it (2 yorkies, 1 shepherd, 1 corgi) and they all love it and are doing well. It's good stuff! My vet told me to make my life simpler and it really helped. NOw my shepherd isn't so possessed with eating the little guys food and getting jealous about it!. |
I would just keep them sepperated. that's all i can think of. maybe it would be good to have them both eat the food that tastes the same. it can be puppy and adult food as long as it is the same brand good luck....! |
