how big?? Hello everyone, we just got a little cutie 15weeks old yorkie girl. She is 3pounds and 12ounces and I just wondered how big she may get. I read through some threads here I discovered that yorkies stop growing at around 6months. Is that true?I do not know how big she was at the age of 8weeks I just have her present weigh. I guess one can not say exactly what weight will thepupp grow but I hope there may be some estimate ... thanks |
I thought the going "rule" was to double the 12-week weight. I could be wrong, my memory does that sometimes =) |
Welcome shell! It's pretty hard to say, but usually they are about double the 3 month or 4 month weight at full maturity. Though if you feed them too well, they can get a bit bigger! :P |
Welcome, shell. I think there are "formulas" used to try and estimate weight at maturity but nothing really exact! Our Toto was 1 lb. 8 oz. when we bought her at 16 wks. Our breeder only allowed us to buy her because she would not reach 3 lbs. and couldn't be shown! Also, our vet kept telling us she wouldn't reach 3 lbs. ... the day she tipped the scales at 3 lbs. we all almost fainted!! We were feeding our picky eater lots of "human" food cooked from a doggie cookbook and she was "chubby"! We got severly reprimended because of her tiny bone structure ... it could cause her joint problems when she is older! She is 16 months now and for a few months has held her weight of 4 lbs.!!! They weighed her 3 times to make sure there was no mistake!! Since she is maintaining this weight, eating her "proper doggie food" ... we believe this is it for her!! Although, she was a "novelty" when she was really tiny, we are glad that she is at least this big because we are so terrified she will get injured ... 4 lbs. is a LOT sturdier!! :) Besides, we just love her so much ... we wouldn't care if she grew to the size of a St. Bernard!!! ;) |
Hi Shell, welcome to yorkie talk, you will love it here, people are helpful, friendly and there's lots of cute yorkies..hehehe As per the growth of yorkies, what i came to learn is that small breeds usually do most (and sometimes all) of it's growth in the first 6 months of life. But it's budy is developing untill they are 1 year old, so im some cases, like in my case, my yorkie grew until almost 1 year old. When I got him he was 4 months and 21 days and weighted about 5lbs, today he is a big boy about 7 lbs. Now, another very important thing is to make sure your yorkie has the right weight for it;s age and size. You have to check her body for signs, in any dog with a healthy weight you should: *Be able to feel the backbone and ribs of your dog but not actually see it (if you feel a noticeable fat covering his/her structure is a sign of some extra 'pounds") *You should be able to see a waist line between the ribs and hips when you look at the dog from above. *The belly should be tuck up (close to rear paws) when you view sideways. |
