help! i can't take it anymore! cocoa is so bad! he is constantly hyper, always bites me and others, tears up everything, and tries to hump my leg, and i can't even hold him! we have gone through puppy class and he learned nothing....he is so bad i'm tempted to sell him b/c its almost to the point i'm always stressed and he brings me no joy....any advice? |
awwww.....he's a puppy - that's what they DO. He should calm down but for now..try to enjoy him and not stress - they pick up on it and that could be the reason he acts out....which really isn't a good word because he's just being what he is...a very young dog not yet mature... these guys are just like having REAL kids. Think of it like this - Kids are in diapers sometimes till 2 YEARS old - your puppy is only a puppy for a few months :D :D I'd try taking him for walks everyday so he can get rid of some of that excess energy and be patient with him. They really do grow out of that biting stage...has he been neutered yet ??? That may or may not help with the Sir Humpalot stuff |
Aw, hun, I can hear your frustration...how old is he?.....It does get better, some are more active than others.....I remember when Jack was a pup it was like trying to hold on to a fish out of water....he may be teething also, about all you can do is discourage it by giving him a lot of things to chew on.....the humping may get better when he's neutered til then gently push him off & firmly tell him no...count to ten & take a deep breath...I just tried to find the humor in it when I could & told myself, "This too shall pass" ..lol... Hang in there... |
He's adorable--send him to me.:D Like V said---- also, will he play fetch? Milo will go at it for about 20 minutes or so and then contentedly go off with a chew toy after. Also, this thingy that I got this week--- has cut down his "bouncing off the walls" time in the morning. (He is curled up sleeping as I type this. ) It occupies his body and mind while he eats his morning kibble. Good luck----------:animal-pa |
ps...if you really ARE too stressed out maybe he does need to be rehomed to someone who can handle it but like I said above....they do grow out of that maniac puppy stage. Me - I always loved it and wish so much I had a little puppy running around :D |
How old is your little one? Sounds like he's got a lot of pent-up energy and needs to let it out somehow. I played ball with mine till I thought my arm would fall off and took them for long walks to tire them out:) Hang in there, it'll get better! |
I'm sorry about what your going through, but yours is a perfect example of why people should do a lot of research before getting a terrier puppy. Terriers are very active dogs, and terrier puppies, be they yorkie, toy fox, jack russel or what ever, are very hyper puppies. They have endless energy, and seem like they are wired up all the time. They play very hard, and then will sleep for an hour and start again. For the biting/nipping of the fingers, you can try a couple of different things. You can try putting lemon juice on your fingers, or vinegar, or even rub a littl hot sauce on them. One of these 3 will usually cause a pup to back off of the nipping. Give him a lot of toys to chew on, or booda bones and get a X-pen to put him in when he gets to be too much for you. This will keep him out of trouble, and give you some peaceful time too. I agree, exercise him more. This is the number one reason that dogs have behavioral issues. They are bored or have pent up energy that they cannot get rid of. When Millie was a puppy, we had to take her out for 2 walks a day, Once in the am before we went to work (yes, it was dark and we had to take a flashlight) and when we got back home from work. (Cold, hot or otherwise) then on top of that, we had to play with her for a good while. Either fetch the ball or tug-of-war with the stuffed toys. We used to sit on the floor and play and play and play. My husband and I tag teamed it. They require a lot of work when they are puppies so that they grow up to be relaxed, behaved adults. So the effort you put into it now, will generate great rewards later with a well-mannered dog. You need to re-direct his chewing to appropriate things. this also takes work and consistency. But if you work at it, soon he'll know what he can and cannot chew on. You need to watch him and make sure you catch right away when he chews on the wrong things and praise him when he chews on the right things. So do the time and soon, yes soon, you will begin to enjoy this beautiful bundle of joy. I noticed significant maturity in Millie about 9 months old, 1 year old and 18 months old. Each was a milestone in maturity. |
it's true what's been said about terrier puppies. They're all the same. i have Skyes & Cairns too & they're much worse than the Yorkies! Lots of play & some training to give them things to think about is the way to a quiter life. If they're still hyper when i'm knackered I sit on the step & hurl their ball down the garden so they've further to run to get it :D Times like these are the worst, when it's been pouring with rain, non stop, for over a week & they're bouncing off the walls :( But they do grow out of it......eventually.Though a terrier will always be more active than some other breeds, my 19 year old Cairn was still galloping round the garden two weeks before she died. |
get him neutered also that would help calm down but yorkies are high energy dogs maybe you should find him a new home with someone who can handle one better |

I sympathize w/you. When I got my first pug I could not believe how bad he was. I swore he was the worst behaved dog on all the land in the world. He did finally calm down around 18 months old. I did get a second pug and the same thing. He was around 16 months old. So bad. I question my decision all the time. But in the end they both ended up being fantastic pets. Try and hang in there. Maybe a walk or two every day would help get rid of some of his energy. You definitely have all of us at YT to vent too! Good luck!!! :aimeeyork |
Lil Baby I'll take him! Quick drive from Alabama to North Carolina! roxanne |
My baby is just the same, shes hyper and nipping at everything, i hope it will pass also, and mine is getting so big, 4.5lbs @ 3 months |
I agree with all those that have said exercise, exercise, exercise, walking, playing ball, and believe me I have learned from all of these ladies listen to what they say. I am a new yorkie owner, Seth about 2 months ago and Sasha who has come to us in the past couple of days. They are so full of energy and it is also good for me to walk, and play with them. Seth and Sasha sleep better at night and take naps during the day when we stick to a routine. THEY are just like real children and we all know that have children routine is what they need. Hang in there it will get better. |
