Docking Tails Yourself? I am so upset, it would just seem to me this is dangerous and the dog could get serious infections. Okay, I am getting ahead of myself... My Sister just informed me that her friend, whom which has a Yorkie named, Dakota is 10 months of age and approx. 7 weeks ago they had tied a rubber band or string .. not sure of that. So that his tail would fall off. My sister had told me that her friend took him to the vet to get it done but they said it would cost her around $250 to have it done. (Me thinking for some good reason for it) so , "the friend" did not want to put that kind of money out, so she decided to do it herself. It is now off, and has been off for a few weeks. What kind of danger could have risen? And do you think it could still be in some danger? Grrrrrrrrrrrrr I am so upset :mad: |
Do Yorkies need to have their tail docked, or is it just a cosmetic thing? If it is just cosmetic, than shame on her! Shame on her anyway, but double for putting cosmetics and money in front of her dog's health! -O |
If this is in response to my original question. I think there is a misunderstanding. I would never have attempted to do this myself. |
That's cruel & dangerous. The 'friend' risked infection and death, not to mention the pain. The vet charge was probably that much because at that point it's an amputation & a certain surgical protocal must be followed. |

The seems awful to me, although I don't know what could come of it medically. I've never heard of anyone doing the docking themselves, although I'm not familiar with the typical process for docking them either. How does the vet do it? |
This thread is about someone who did it themselves to a 10 month old pup. My vet does it in the office when the puppies are 2-4 days old. She uses a hot tool that severs the tail and cauterizes it at the same time. I know that some experienced breeders do it themselves. My greatgrandma raised cocker spaniels and her vet taught her to do her own docking. |

I have heard of more experienced breeders doing it themselves, but they do this when the puppy is only a few days old. I've never heard of docking a tail when the dog is older. I think it's ridiculous to dock the tail after 10 months. |

I was curious about this while I was looking at puppies, but since they all had their tails docked I just thought it was something that was necessary. I should have asked the breeder; I feel terrible thinking that my poor boy was in pain just to look like a show dog.... Sorry to get off track, I guess you just hit a curious note -O |
