On there There is dogs dieing from eating beneiful and going through the same thing as My Mickey is Put My dog is eating beneful and now hes very sick. in google search and see what Im talking about, im so upset. |
Oh my Im in tears. http://quikonnex.com/channel/item/26035 |
I am not shocked. I just googled it and am very saddened. |
Huni I know that's an awful thing to see when you're going through all this with Mickey but please, please calm down... he's under supervision and the vets are doing everything to get him on the right track. Don't think the worse untill you've spoken to the vet again about what you've read. :( |
Im trying to stay calm, but its very hard to when reading stuff like this. http://www.palmcoast.biz/portal/foru...?TID=7830&PN=1 Warning for dog owners (Purina Beneful) I recently read about how Purina Beneful dog good had been causing a lot of dogs to get ill. I checked some sources online, mainly Snopes, and so far its undetermined. But it still caught my attention and I know the brand is popular. So I wanted to pass it on. And frankly, a food with that many dyes in it just so it looks good to YOU can't be good. And I know Purina (along with Iams) has gotten in trouble before for grinding up dog meat and putting it into dog food (not much different then cows getting cow meat....mad dog disease anyone?) I use to feed my dogs Beneful a few years ago, but stopped when I heard about the dog meat scandal. Now the jury is still out whether the food is causing it, but I wouldn't chance it. Too many people go solely on how the food looks or is talked about in the commercial. They are trying to sell their product, of course they make it sound good. Do you REALLY think TOP breeders use Pedigree??? Hell no! They use foods like Solid Gold, Wellness and Nutro. Foods that DON'T contain dyes, whole ground corn, etc. Learn how to read labels. A lot of dog food contains pestcides too that are listed as "preservatives", learn to know the difference. --------------------------- Beneful Dog Food is Suspected of Causing Sickness and Deaths DoggyBling.com HEALTH ALERT! ..... Discontinue use of Beneful until this is resolved! Multiple Reports We have received multiple reports of dogs becoming sick or dying after eating Beneful dog food. The first reports were placed in our new forum and was overlooked by DoggyBling.com staff until we received direct emails last week and then another today. After speaking on the phone with the lady who emailed us today, we feel that there is sufficient cause for alarm. Dog lovers make a lot of effort to take good care of their dogs and will want to know if they are feeding them something that could be harmful. Most of the alerts by email, forum and phone cited Beneful dog food that was purchased at Wal Mart around Christmas of 2006. We spoke with Terri Culp at Beneful this morning and were assured that they are aware of the situation and are researching the problem. We assured them that this won't go away and we would be alerting our email base of the problem and posting a news item on our site. We also told her that DoggyBling.com visitors and dog lovers everywhere would be evaluating the way the Purina Corporation (Parent to Beneful) handles the potential crisis. Symptoms The symptoms reported have been very similar. The reported symptoms include some or all of the following: General weakness or sluggishness, glazed eyes, not interested in food or water, white gums, lack of control of bodily functions. Some of the callers reported dogs that have died and others say they had gotten sick but had recovered. I am inserting the first forum post about a dog that became sick, but didn't die. A week before Christmas we bought a bag of Beneful dog food at Wal-Mart, DeFuniak Springs, FL. On 12/23 I noticed a tan mold like growth on the dog food. Our 14 year old Dalmatian mix had been getting weaker by the day and by 12/24 she was near death. Glazed eyes, couldn't stand, eat, drink or control her functions. Her gums were white. We had to carry her to the yard and hold her up so she could go. The only thing she would eat was ham and turkey scraps. I spoke with a microbiologist and she said the mold growing in the dog food was toxic. It took a week for Sparky to regain her strength. I did notify the manufacturer of Beneful, they were very sorry and are sending coupons. Said it was a rare happening. Beneful's Website Notify us if your dog has had symptoms after using Beneful We are going to stay on top of this situation and would like to know if your dog has had any of the symptoms listed above after eating Beneful. If so, please send an email to ric@doggybling.com or give us a call at 904-430-0260. Either way, please pass this email and information to dog lovers who may be feeding this food to their dog. DoggyBling.com http://www.doggybling.com UPDATES: Updates and Beneful's response and precautionary action will be listed in our news section. We know Purina will take this seriously and will not want to tarnish their company's positive reputation. News Item about Beneful http://www.doggybling.com/newsarticle.php?id=1070 |
OK....I didn't see it before but I'm assuming Mickey was eating Beneful? And I agree...your guy is on the road to recovery! |
Wow I just don't know why the pet food industry can't get a handle on this teribble problem. |

It's awful what you're reading and I know you want to read it but please don't work yourself up... when can you next speak to a vet? |
Im suppose to talk to him tomorrow, because the recall place is also talking to them too. I have saved the bags of their food when they first got sick along with a baggies of the food in the freezer. I did this because I wanted to keep it just incase it was on the recall, now im so glad I did. |

Please let us know as soon as you've spoken to the vet tomorrow huni. Sending Mickey love. |
Oh my gosh, YorkieShadow!! I can't believe that this is happening :( Your Mickey will get better though. He's already started on the road to improvement. The dog food company should be paying Mickey's vet bills... |
Here is a link that I found helpful and easy to read as far as rating your dog food. I feed Timberwolf Organic's Good luck and read your label's! www.dogfoodanalysis.com. |
OMG I am freaking out right now. Bella eats this food and goes crazy over it. She is like obsessed with it; NO more. Can anyone recommend a good food??  |

http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/beneful.asp http://urbanlegends.about.com/librar...l_dog_food.htm http://www.handicappedpets.com/news/beneful.html http://www.purina.com/WheatGluten.aspx http://www.purina.com/Index.aspx My lab has been eating Beneful for months now and she's fine. We're switching her to Purina One but only because that's what my Bella's used to and it's a pain in the ass trying to feed them different foods. I don't doubt there's sick dogs, but it sounds like the jury's still out on this one. |
Oh my gosh, I am so, so sorry. This is just terrible. Reading all this stuff just makes me so sad for everyone... |
O my gosh! I can't belive this I have never feed this to my yorkie but when we got our shnauzer in febuary this is what they were feeding her and she refused to eat anything else she would go without eating till I finally gave in a bought her some. Thank God I finally got her to eat canidae now I am wondering if this is why she acted so sick when we brought her home? |
We have tried many brands, chicken soup, kibbles, Yorkie brands and just so many, and they just wont eat it, so we always go back to the beneful because they need to eat some thing. and I knew it was not good for them, but what do you do when they refuse to eat any thing else?:( |
I fed mine beneful a few weeks ago cause we couldn't go to the petstore and they're fine now..I hope your furkids are okay too. |
I would NOT feed anything to my Yorkies that has had a recall in ANY of their products...dry or moist. I ahve already gone thruogh buying two bags of dog food only to have a recall the next week after I bought it. I am now feeding my 2 yorkies Innova....check out their website. I am using the adult dry food. So far so good. It does not contain rice protien. Hope this helps. And please stay clam. We just may have to keep switching foods. Just keep a close eye on your kids for any kind of strange behavior. Tina |
My boys are doing great on Solid Gold. I have them on Just A Wee Bit. They prefer the Hund-U- Flocken, but I put them back on the just a wee bit because they were having too many stools with the Hund-Un-Flocken. Not diarrhea, just lots of stool. I hope and pray Mickey's recovery continues without a hitch. |

and as for the strange behavior, they been sick sense April 5th. |
beneful has been making dogs sick for a long time. it just doesn't agree with some of them. it usually only causes upset stomach, vomiting and diarrhea. I've never heard of it producing problems like your mickey has. I saw a lot of cases where dogs were getting sick and we couldn't figure out why until we found of they were on beneful. we told them to switch right away and the problems went away. |
well our next foods to try is Solid gold webits, Innova, canidea and wysong. well all but Mickey hes gonna have to get on and stay on the prescrition diet foods. |

Remember you're doing the right thing. You've kept the food he was eating when he got sick. You've reported his illness, the vet knows what he's been through. It will all work out, just concentrate on getting him well. There are an awful lot of horror stories out there about pet food right now, don't jump to conclusions...If it turns out that it was the food, they'll find out, Mickey just needs to be taken care of, first things first, okay? Think about his improvements...there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Don't make yourself sick, you're already worried enough. But as I told you in the beginning, if you're not satisfied with the medical care he's getting, take him for other opinions, 2nd, 3rd...how ever many it takes to get quality care. Keep good records of everything, from the beginning and most of all do not give up on him!!! He's worth it, and his health depends on you keeping a level head, you have to stay strong and determined. We'll continue to get through this, we're all together in this fight for Mickey's life. Take care, hugs & prayers... |
