I have the best vet! LOL I love him :p We had to postpone Pixie's getting fixed and her other knee surgery because she was back on steroids for her collapsing trachea. We are using 2 different vets right now, our main one, and the one doing her surgeries. The surgeon doesn't want to knock her out while she's on Prednizone. I called my main vet today and explained to the tech that we need to get Pixie off her steroids and figure out something else so that she can have her surgery. She put me on hold... A few minutes later, she came back and explained that they weren't going to prescribe me anything yet, that the vet really wanted a consult with us, and could we be there at 2:30? (it was close to 1 at the time) I was like uhh, yeah, sure. I was a little confused, but I understood that he wanted 1 on 1 with us to figure out where to go with Pixie and her meds. I DIDN'T know the miscommunication or what his consultation was for, though ROFL We waltz on into the vet clinic, they usher us into a room, and in comes the vet... looking really concerned and holding an open text book. I cracked a joke and was like, "Do we get to learn to be vets now?" He said "Yeah." and did his whole nice greetings, shaking hands, how are you, etc.... Then he goes, "So someone's going to do her surgery?" We're like... "Yeah, the same surgeon who did her right leg is doing her left" All the sudden, he looked all relieved and such, and he goes "OH! That's wonderful then. So you're not having the trachea surgery?" We were shocked - we'd already discussed that a long time ago and decided it was WAY too risky and there wasn't any way we'd do it unless it came time to put her down. We had no idea that's even what HE was thinking when we said "her surgery" - he's the one who instigated the knee surgeries, so he knew about her knees. He knew she'd had her first and is likely to have her other soon. LOL We just assumed he knew that's what we meant. Silly us. LOL Anyway, I told him what I knew of the surgery and that we'd decided that was not an option. He grabbed his text book, put it on the table in front of us, and I looked down at what it was open to - the trachea surgery. He said he was going to give us a stern lecture and show us exactly what they do and exactly what her chances were... but that wasn't necessary, and he closed the book LOL Then he goes, "So you're just interested in what to put her on while they do her knee surgery? We can discuss different medications..." and off we went. I love my vet. He's sooo good to us, he's always so graphic, too. He wants us to understand everything we face. If he has nothing else, he'll grab a paper towel and draw a dog and show us what he's talking about. To him, it is really important for us as pet owners to really understand what we're dealing with, and he tells us exactly what he thinks - even if it's not so good. This time, he was prepared with a text book LOL I can't get over him and bringing in his book to teach us :p I can't imagine not having a wonderful vet who isn't scared to step in and take the time to teach us everything we need to know. |
The vet sounds awesome. I love when they show genuine concern for our pups. |
That's awesome that he wants you to understand everything!!! I hate when doctors just give you over-views and not every detail, especially since I was going to go to school for nursing, I know a littlemore medical talk then the average person, and it's like "O.K I know this, but explain more...". You're very lucky to have a vet so good! |
aww! your vet does sound wonderful! its so nice to hear about good vets out there that REALLY CARE about your animal and you! |
That's really good. Sometimes if you ask questions, they get offended like you are questioning their ability. They should know that those of us with really small dogs have concerns that their little bodies can take the stress. |
He sounds wonderful...My old vet in Sugar Land TX is just like that and that's why I go to HIM for anything important...a good vet like that is hard to find You guys have been thru alot....all the best to you :) |
And really, we had a "good" vet before. When we moved, we kept eyeing that vet's office right by our house, but it took us a couple months to get the courage to go there. I finally took Pixie for something "small" to save the drive and see how that vet was.... I was amazed. I came home chattering nonstop about this new vet and how awesome he was. Now, his # is in our cell, he sees hubby and they discuss fishing, I can call the office and go, "Hi, this is..." and hear "How's Pixie?" They are awesome. All of them - even the techs. I still can't get over him bringing in his text book though. THAT was just too funny :D |
