How to feed a Yorkie and a big dog??? We are adopting a boxer soon and I hope my breeder will have a baby ready for me in a few months. How do you go about feeding two dogs who I would assume eat different food? I am not worried about the Boxer, but I am worried that the Boxer will eat all of the yorkies food!! Any advice? |
I have a pit bull and a yorkie mix. Laney, my pittie eats twice a day and goobles up all her food at one time. I feed the yorkie x in his crate whenever needed and when he isn't in it I just lock the door so Laney cant get to the food. |
Haha...that is tricky...we have a Boykin Spaniel who LOVES yorkie food and yorkies that LOVE big dog food lol...I will often put a little bit of the yorkies food in with Sadies food...she seems to appreciate it!! Its harder to keep the yorkies out of the big dog food though lol... Dawn |
My mom has a boxer and she feeds him Kibbles N Bits...Rocky loves it! Actually, the girl who owned Rocky before fed him that too, but the mini-bits (or whatever their called). But whenever Rocky goes to my moms he eats Gizmo's food, it's not that often and he doesn't eat that much of it, so it's no biggy. Actually yesterday Rocky went up and started eating out of Gizmo's bowl (when Gizmo was eating), then he had the nerve to growl at Gizmo! Gizmo just walked away, I felt bad for him |
We have a 8 year old boxer and now just our Holly girl :( , anyway, with her and when we had Prince we have never had a problem with food and them eating. They eat the same food and I dont know if it is because she is just a good dog (which boxers are) but she has always let the little ones eat first and if she is eating and they come up she backs up and waits till they are done, you shouldnt have a big problem with it, best of luck to you. :D |
Thanks for all of the advice :) Looks like I have a few different approches I can try! We are rescuing the boxer so she will be a few years older, maybe with her "wiser" ;) disposition, she will be kind to the new puppy! |
Thanks for rescuing! Has she been in a foster home with other dogs? If so be sure to ask them how she does with other dogs around her food. Laney does not like other dogs approaching her when she eats and will give them a warning snap. She doesn't mind people messing with it at all, but just doesn't like the other dogs around. Just a word of caution cause a warning snap could hurt such a small dog. |
Well, we haven't chosen the specific dog yet, they are acutally coming to our house tonight to do a "home check". I do think that most have been around other dogs. The few that we looked at say "does well with other dogs." I would assume eating was included there, but I will definatly ask! Thanks!! :) Quote:

we're getting a boxer puppy today... Hello, Me & Toby are new to Yorkie Talk and I saw this thread & couldn't help but to say hello and that today we are getting a new puppy. He's a fawn Boxer with a black mask and my husband is going to name him "Buttkiss"... OMG! Anyway we are excited and I'm happy for Toby (the Yorkie King of the House) because now he'll have a buddy to grow up with. Toby is about 18 months now and is my pride and joy. My husband is excited to have his "own" dog and made me promise to let him spoil "Buttkiss" himself !! I can't wait. :) Patty :aimeeyork Toby ;) Husband :animal36 ButtKiss :wavey: Nice to have a place to brag about these wonderful faithful furry companions..... |

Okay My Big Dog eats two times a day and at each feeding the two yorkies get a few kibbles from Amy's bowl ( this is the highlight of there day) The Yorkies are free fed and I have there kibbles in there expen that is Open just enought for them to get in. Amy does not try to get in there thank god. When we first stated to put it in there she would lay just outside it and watch them but is a good girl and knows it is theirs :) Funny thing is if she really wanted it it would be Really easy for her to get to:) |
