How can a yorkie do this? My yorkie is 1 year old and is potty trained on pads. The question i have is we took a 6 hour trip and he held it the whole time. When we got to the hotel he would not do anything on the pad. He finally peed on the patio 2 hours later. How can a small dog hold it so long?, has anyone had this happen to them before?, and is it harmful for him to hold it that long? |
Hi! I gate my yorkie into the bathroom when I go to work. He is very comfortable in there with water, toys, a bed, and piddle pads. He usually goes once during my nine hours gone, but on a few occasions he has held it until I got home. I couldn't believe it either. :) |
Is the reason everyone uses these pads because it's hard to train a Yorkie to go outside, or do they just have a hard time holding it. Thanks |

I only use the pads for him when I'm not home. If he can't hold it, I want him to have something to go on. He is being trained to go outside and seems to be catching on pretty well. He's only seven months, so he's bound to have accidents if I'm gone for a long time--the pads make cleanup much easier. :) |
Hi ....Maybe your baby was stressed out from traveling ? I had a cat that held it for 4 DAYS when I moved to Texas.....couldn't believe it - he was just NOT going to leave my side for anything and held it the whole time....Your baby probably wasn't comfortable enough to go and nervous.... |
A grown yorkie can hold it for up to 12 hours! They won't take any harm from it as long as it is VERY rare that they have to do this. |

Maggie is put to bed around the same time everynight and gets up at the same time every morning and holds it the entire time. She is also locked in the kitchen from about 9:45 to 3:45 everyday and holds it that entire time, too. As for the pad training, we always have pads down. When we first got Maggie, we had planned to trian her on both the pads and to go outside but the pad training didn't work so we just started outside training. Once it started to get colder outside, we trained her on the pads and now that's all she'll use. |
Trace can hold it the entire night, so I know he can do it....if HE wants to. I still have to take him out every 30 minutes or so during the day because if he's busy running around, he'd simply squat and go. Training to go outside is only harder because you have to be available to take them outside. I've read a lot of posts who are very successful in pad training, but I could never get past the idea (in my mind) that I would be training him to go INSIDE the house when what I wanted was for him to go outside. I think it's easier if you pick one or the other. |

Jer, I don't think it is harmful for them to hold their bladder on rare occasions but if the dog is holding it all the time by not his/her choice I do feel it might cause harm in the long run. My parents have a Bichon and received him as a pup and instantly grew up in a motorhome traveling since my parents are retired. Their Bichon would hold his bladder all day many times being locked in the coach until let out to go. At this time my parents were not aware of potty pad training. Well now that their Bichon is older he has bladdar stones and is on special food. My parents deeply regret knowing that most of this is their fault for having him hold his bladder so long on numerous occasions. I am guessing it depends on the dog and situations etc. |
Most Important: be sure they have water at all times. A one year old should easily be able to go through the night without going potty. I trained my pups on a pee pee pad, and sorta like a child - soon they never used it. It is very inexpensive when they stay dry :rolleyes: . I stopped putting them (pee pee pads) down eventually. When Zowie was pregnant, she began having occasional accidents. I think I had two pads left and put one in the cage. When she had her babies, she used the pads for the first week, now she is mainly going outside again, but I have given her an entire room for her and the babies, and I have a pad in there because I am feeding her so much and not taking her out as much. Just easier for me. I have hard tile, and if she goes on the floor, it runs through the grout like a river, ick! :eek: |
Mojito was strictly crate trained when we got him but we automatically switched him to pads around the apartment and he picked it up REALLY fast. For the first couple of weeks we also put a pad in his crate when it was bedtime but we soon realized that he refused to go in there. In fact, when I'd wake up in the morning and take him out of the crate he'd follow me to the bathroom and go at the same time that I did!!! I won't say that there haven't been some "oops!" moments but he's been accident-free for about three weeks! Now, if I could only get him to go outside when we're out and about then we'd have the perfectly trained pup! (We've actually been outside at a bbq and I finally broke down and put down a pad when I realized he refused to go and he peed and pooped on the pad!) Any suggestions, anyone? I'm not trying to train him to be an outdoor bathroom dog but I want to make sure he knows it's OK to go outside if he needs to... |
How long can a yorkie "hold it" Both my girls are potty trained, one is 1 yr and one is 9 months. But, I am retired and could take them outside from the beginning, which I did 24/7 for a week or so. I never used a pee pee pad and am glad, however can see how it would be needed esp for those that work. My yorkie book says not to be surprised when a puppy can hold it all night but not during the day, it is normal. Also, I heard that if you take their age and add an hour, that is how long one can go without pottying. I used this rule of thumb when they were small, so at 3 months, I would try to be home within 4 hours to let them out. I also read an interesting story about someone who trained their dog to use a liter box. So, it's probably an individual as our dogs. |

She doesn't bark ever, so I don't know how to get her to let me know she wants to go out. When I take her out she will go eventually if we are out but on command |
