A Hawk tried to get Buddah!! That may seem a little over dramatic, but here is what happened. There is a small grassy area in my apartment complex. We always go there to potty. Buddah is really good about staying in the grass and never tries to run away so I usually let him roam leash trailing behind. I always sit on a concrete cylinder around the light post and watch him. He runs comes back to me....runs....comes to me....runs on and on and then we go inside. Well this morning I took him out as usual. He was running around happy as a little yorkie can be when I hear this wierd shriek like noise. Not very loud though real quiet. I look into the tree next to the grass and see this HUGE Hawk perch down on the branch. My first reaction was not to grab Buddah, but OMG look at that bird its sooo big. I was in amazement because I had never seen one so close and didnt realize how big they were. He was gorgeous. All of a sudden I noticed he was VERY fixated on something and was starting to tense up getting ready to strike. I look to where he is watching and OMG he is looking at BUDDAH!!!!! I yelled Buddah and ran towards him in a giant leap. Grabbed his leash and covered him with my body. As I was doing this the hawk flew away. Scared me to death!!! Buddah was totally oblivious and quite upset that I cut grass time short and took him right inside. I guess no more romps in the grass for him. |
 a close call. thank-goodness he's ok. i don't think enough yorkie parents are aware of the dangers of predator birds. they are a serious threat. we had a very close call with an owl. very scary. |
Wow how scary. I am glad hes okay |
Whoa!!! That is so scary!!!  You are so lucky you reacted so fast, because those birds can swoop and snatch in the blink of an eye!!!! Thank goodness buddah's ok! |
You know I tell people about it all the time and am really careful when I am in places I think it would be a threat. When Buddah and I go to my parents house he is not allowed outside with the other dogs because they live in the boonies. I never expected to have the problem at my house. I live in Irvine; in the middle of Orange County. in between two freeways and industrial all over. I have never even seen a hawk around in the 4 years I have lived out here. Well now I know! |
How scary! The same thing happened to me. I let Mika out into the yard, and went inside, then went to go check on her, and saw a huge hawk sitting on the fence, staring at her. I don't let her out alone now |
the scary thing that i've read about hawks in areas like yours is because there is so much building and hwys exc. their natural food supply is going away. causing them to look for alternative food like dogs. which probaly is not their first choice. |
That had to have been so scary. We are about to put up a new fence, but they will never be allowed out without me right there watching the skies. |

The scary thing is even when he is on a leash it could be fatal. Those talons are so sharp and yanking the leash would just make it worse. The only piece of mind is hoping the bird would come down with him so i could kick it in the head. Thats mean. but i love buddah so much |
 The guilt I would feel if a hawk got my baby. I could not even imagine. Thank god nothing happened to your sweetie!:aimeeyork |
