Hernia Question I am stumped and wondering if you guys can give me advice.. The week after I got Mocha I took her to the vet and he said she had ingenial hernias and the needed to be repaired... I have been holding off.. Anyway, today she went to the vet and (same office, different vet) and he mentioned she needs to get spayed soon before she has her first heat!! I told him I was concerned because I didn't have the hernias repaired and he said wait 6 months or so... Justin (my bf) said I need to get them fixed now but i am trusting the vet!! What are your opinions?? |
Well Baby had an inguainal hernia when I got her, you could see it on her little belly and i was always so scared about it. My vet wanted her to be a little bigger than 2 lbs. when she had her surgery. We decided to do the spaying and fix the hernia at the same time, thus making her only go through the anesthesia once. So we waited and i was just really careful with her, I didn't bathe her because she would stress out so bad and push on her little belly and it would cause the hernia to bulge out so bad. So basically she was a dirty Baby for her first four months...lol..jsut kidding...But anyways, so when she was about 4 months old and about 3.5-4 lbs we had her dual surgery. Everything went fine and she has never suffered any because of it. So basically my vet thought it was best to wait as long as possible (before 6 months of age of course) to just lessen the chance of problems during surgery. So good luck, I hope I was helpful some. Sorry to ramble! |
Sammi had an iniguial hernia also...I had it repaired at the time of spaying, she was 8 months old...I had it done during spaying because I did not want to have to put her under 2 times... http://www.2ndchance.info/hernia.htm http://www.leonberger.coolfreepage.c...lth/hernia.htm http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/petcolumns/s...icle.cfm?id=48 Hope this helps..Please feel free to email/PM/IM me with any questions!! I agree with waiting till spay for repair. Keep an eye out for regular BMs and throwing up. If you see any of that then the hernia may need immediate attention. |
Thamks for all your help and advice... Basically, the guy I got my dog from (Ivan at Quality Canines) told me if I went to his vet they would do the surgery (only the hernia) at no cost... My vet was going to charge $1350... I decided I really couldn't afford that and wanted to wait and take her to Brooklyn to Ivan's vet!! I haven't had anytime to do that and when she went to the vet today he said its time for her to be spayed and to take care of that first.. He said the hernia might repair itself in a couple of month but I am still worried cause Justin says it needs to be fixed NOW |
Wow that seems REALLY expensive...I paid $250 for the spaying and hernia together. Can the vet that is repairing the hernia also spay her, with you paying the additional cost??? I really have no idea about the hernia repairing itself, I have never heard of that. |
Wow, that is really expensive...I paid 385 for spaying and hernia repair...Hey Brooke...PM me (if you want) with the name of Ivan's vet Is it in Brooklyn?? If so, maybe you can go see my vet and see what he says...Not that your vet is not great by any means...I am just blown away by 1350 for a hernia repair... Thanks!! XoXoXoXoXo Fran and Sammo |
