Outdoor safety question After reading about poor Zackie, I suddenly became fearful about the safety of my deck. It is about 6-7 feet off the ground. There is a gap of about 5-6 inches between the railing and the decking. It would be all too easy for Gracie to fall off the deck. What would you suggest I do to make it safe for her to be out on the deck off leash? I was thinking about stapling some window screening or chicken wire to the bottom of the railing to help fill in that gap. It needs to be something easily removed in the event the home owner's association wants to refinish the deck or something. |
What you suggested sounds like a good solution. There is also a "plastic like" chicken wire (it comes in rolls in the garden dept.) that is out now to keep birds out of gardens. It works great also and won't rust like chicken wire. I actually got some and put it over the ground in my dog yard (the grass grows throught it and eventually you can't really see it) it helps so that they can't dig holes in the yard or dig under the fence. |

What's the story with Zackie??? I let both my dogs out on our deck but if something terriable has happened we may need to rethink what we do. However if my dogs get too close I make come back or say NO |
Ok I found it OMG how horriable!!! |
1 Attachment(s) When we rebuilt our front deck we had the same thing so we added some 2 by 2's under the bottom...like this...but don't look at that messy stone wall next to the deck! The 2 by 2's filled the space enough so the boyz can't get under the railing but it left it open so I can still sweep the deck when needed. |
I did a search on making decks and balconies pet and child safe. FYI, do not use staples to attach chicken wire, garden netting, etc. to the bottom of the deck railing. If a staple pulls loose, it can cut or scratch your fur kid. Use plastic ties or screws instead. Another option I came up with is Plexiglas that can be screwed on to the bottom of the railing. I'm thinking of doing this in a 2 x 2 size. No one would know it is there but me and Gracie would be safe. |
Good idea! That way they can still see off the deck also. |
We've had the chicken wire up for over two years now and no rust. They can see out and get the breezes too.:) Were going to have wrought iron Spanish style railing put in, and a metal decrative scroll at the bottom half so they can't get through. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...l5-13-0700.jpg |

That looks good. Do you have any problems with them trying to climb it? I have a couple that would do that, unfortunately. It is so humid here that I was afraid that after a few years it would rust and break (if I put it on the ground) and then they would get poked by the sharp ends, that's why I went with plastic. Anything metal really rusts here! |
They have never even stood up with front paws on it. Mine aren't climbers, but wow, it certainly would hurt the feet if they did try it. The chicken wire comes in different sizes. We live in a very foggy area, so we do have lots of wetness almost every night and morning, not to mention we are close to the ocean and have the humid breezes off of it. Not sure what the chicken wire is made out of, but since it's made to house chickens I'm sure it's made not to rust out that easily. We don't have one rust spot so far. |
The chicken wire is a very good idea!!! |
1 Attachment(s) :) Old picture, but this is what we use for Uma. She would leap off the deck without it! Not pretty, but effective. You can find it at Lowes or just about any large garden store. It is made of plastic.:) |
3 Attachment(s) Here is a picture of the plastic fencing (chicken wire alternative). If you can find it the plexiglass would be the most safe (no chance of climbing) and the most invisible. |
Thank you all so much for the pictures! |
