Size of Cage Hi Everyone, I put a deposit on a Yorkie puppy, she's 5 weeks old. She's not a teacup or a toy so, I assume she's considered a "standard". I think I want to crate her and I'm not sure what size cage I should get. Should I get one that's big enough for her wee, wee pad, water, food, and bedding? Or should I get a smaller one and just keep it to the bedding only??? This may have been discussed in the past, but I don't have a lot of time to spend on the computer and search for an answer. I look forward to a reply. I have never owned a Yorkie and I'm looking so forward to her becoming part of my family. Thank You, Tammy |
Congrats on your new baby and welcome to YT!!! You will learn a lot here once you have time to browse the site..As for your question my breeder gave me a list of items for bringing home my first yorkie!! Do you know the size of her mom and dad?? That might give you an indication..how much does she weigh now??? My baby uses a playpen which has enough room for his bed, food, and wetting pad....he is only about 3lbs @ 7 months and he has plenty of room when he is home alone!!! which thankfully is not that often!!! :) hope this helps some and I know you will get plenty of advice from the more seasoned yorkie owners here who are a big help to new owners like us!!! |
I think it depends on how you want to train her. If you want to crate train her and teach her to go outside. Then you don't leave enough room in there to do her business. But if you want to teach her to go on pee pads, then you can get an x-pen where you can put the pee pad on one side, and then put the food, water, and a doggie bed on the other side. I'm sure you'll get many more informative answers, good luck!! |
umm i suggest the midwest life stages crates :) they come in all sizes and have a divider so you can make the crate bigger/smaller as the pup grows. thats what i did with my dog, the crate was great for potty training and now its a great place for him to hang out hope i helped :) |
New Puppy Welcome to Yorkie Talk :) Congratulations on your new baby. I can't give you any advice on crate training as I did not use one. I bought interlocking baby gates and made a small square for my little one. Her little area contained her bed, water, toys, food and pee pad. My little one did very well. She is now 4 and I work all day and she has the run of the house. I do leave a boot tray covered in newspapers in the kitchen just in case but most often they are unused when I get home. The papers come in handy in the winter as on really cold days I do not take her outside as it is too cold for her so she uses her newspapers. I live in a split level and the stairs are too steep forher to go down so I just have her on a regular potty schedule and it works for us. When I get another little one I am going to use the same system as it has worked very well for me. The only thing I did wrong was let her have the run of the house too soon, she was about 6 months old and she chewed the legs of my dining room chairs and some of the molding around the doors. But other than that she was a little angel. I hope this info was helpful but it is not expert advice it is only my experience with my precious one. Good luck, Jay :) |
