Our new puppy comes home in three weeks! Any insider tips?
 

This is Bikini. She's about 9 weeks old.

She's our first Yorkie, so I've been reading a ton. I'm familiar with the standard tips and techniques, but maybe you have some secret insider advice you'd be willing to impart?

All I can say from what I have learned is that Yorkies own you, you do not own them. It is amazing the love you will feel for your new baby. Good luck and keep us posted!:aimeeyork

What a sweet girl! Welcome to YT. Well, there are many things, but one thing I've learned are Yorkies have huge personalities in small bodies. Lol, they think they are big dogs!

First off she is just a doll baby!!! Very cute name too.....Well I have a 2 year old Bella, and a 9 week old Diggy :yeahthat: THEY OWN YOU! My girl was much easier that this lil boy of mine, but im sure that varies dog to dog....My sugesstions are Quality food, read up on nutrical, and be ready for life as you know it to be OVER lol in a good way:)

Give them a treat everytime the use there pee pads or go to the bathroom in the right spot. My yorkie loves it.

Like diggy4 said, read up on nutrical. I have also found it handy to have pedialyte and baby food on hand, but my puppy is younger than yours.

Welcome to YT. Bikini is adorable. I can't wait to see more pics. Socializing at a young age is real important. Consider taking a puppy class or going to dog parks where she can be around other dogs, preferable smaller ones at first.

Everything else you'll figure out along the way, but if you miss socializing in the first six months, it's hard to make that time up.

Just be careful what you do with her before she has had all her shots. My brother and sister in laws pup almost died two weeks ago from parvo! I dont take my meeka barely any where, she hasnt had all hers yet...... I know it is common since but it is exciting to show them off so it is hard!

As suggested, the biggest items you'll need are good food, an x-pen, and some pee pads and a good harness.

Congratulations, your baby is sooooooo cute! There are tons of tips, but make sure you have toys for her because they LOVE toys. And, plenty of things to chew on like flossies or bully sticks because it will help to keep her from chewing things she's not supposed to. Have Nutrical on hand and be sure to read up on it so you know when it's the right time to give it to her. If she doesn't eat, try hand feeding her and see if that helps. Sometimes when they're that young, they don't want to eat much at first. I would imagine going to a new home with new surroundings is quite traumatic for them. If she won't eat by hand feeding her, try giving her a little bit of boiled chicken, cottage cheese, yogurt or rice in her food.

If she's anything like Jake, be careful that she can't get into the bathroom unsupervised because these little ones love to grab the toilet paper and run with it and/or chew it in pieces :D

I agree that socialization is soooo important...as long as she's had all her shots! I heard many horror stories about unimmunized puppies and parvo, but after Sukoshi got all her shots, we took her EVERYWHERE with us, so she would be very well socialized. We introduced her to all sorts of people of various ages, and we let them all touch her (not necessarily hold her), so she got used to being approached by people; all sorts of sounds (places like Home Depot are especially good for socialization so they aren't scared by loud noises and such later - HD has saws going, forklifts beeping, etc.); and all sorts of textures (grass, concrete, hard wood, carpet, etc.). I am pleased to say that Sukoshi is NOT a barker/yapper at all, unless she hears something outside at night that she thinks we need to check out - which is once in a blue moon. She loves people, although she seems to still be able to sense "unfriendly" ones.

Also, I think it is extremely important to decide where you want your new baby to sleep at night, and STICK WITH YOUR DECISION - no matter how cute she is or how much she cries that first night home. I've talked to plenty of people who gave in that first night, and now, years later, their babies are still sleeping in their bed with them. My husband and I are newlyweds, so we decided right away that we wanted our little girl to have her own space her in crate, but that the bed was ours. Although she cried herself to sleep the first few nights, after the first week, she went right to sleep, and she knows to go to her crate when it's bedtime. We do let her lay in bed with us in the evenings while we're watching tv or movies in the bedroom, but when it's time for lights out, we set her on the floor and she goes to her own bed. Now...if you're looking forward to having her snuggle with you in bed all night long...then ignore that last bit of advice!

And just have fun with her! She'll love you to pieces for it!

what's the deal with nutrical?

from what i've found online, it sounds like an emergency nutritional treatment for sick/non-eating dogs.

she's off her mom's milk and has been introduced to real food for a few weeks now.

they all come with remotes. You just press potty train. and on and off when you need some peace. but please, dont spread the word, we wouldnt want evrey1 knowing! lol :P

seriously, my favorite tip is too put a bell on that lil puppys collar, beleive me, it helps :)
