Abbie's 2nd Therapy Dog Visit Abbie had her second weekly therapy dog visit today at a local nursing home. The first time she probably saw close to 30 residents. Today is was closer to 20 or so. Still a lot. The first time she was good through most of it. Toward the end (2 hours) she was beginning to stress out. Today we were still there 2 hours but with fewer residents so it was easier for her. If anyone is interested in doing this, I'll tell you it's very rewarding to the residents, staff, me and even Abbie seems to enjoy it for the most part. We're still learning the ropes but I'm very glad we got involved in this. |
GOOD for you !! I'd love to see pictures if you can get some...there's nothing sweeter than to see a senior lovin on a dog....That's really great of you to do |
I think what you're doing is wonderful!! My grandmother is in a nursing home, and they have a dog who comes in every couple weeks, and it cheers my grandma up to no end! She will talk and talk about the dog for days. I was actually thinking of doing this with Jake at her nursing home. How do you go about getting involved in this?:) |
Sorry I'm just getting back here to answer. I have Abbie registered through Therapy Dogs International, the oldest of the therapy dog organizations. If you go on their web site www.tdi-dog.org you can find a list of the criteria that your dog must do in order to become certified. It's really not much different than the AKC Good Canine Citizen test, just adds medical equipment in some, in others the tester gags and coughs in their face to see how they react, etc. In other words, try to mimic situations a dog is likely to encounter in the "job". Once you're confident your dog will perform well, you have to go to a testing site (also on their website) and be tested. If you pass, you send in the paperwork along with $35.00 and they....eventualy....will send you your paperwork. I'll warn you, the process is long, but so worth it. Good luck and if I can answer any more questions, feel free to PM me. |
